DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences is composed of 65 faculty and clinical fellows. The department is composed of 7 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Hospitalist, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and Complex Family Planning.

This Lab Assistant II will work under supervision to assist with performing work in cell biology/molecular biology including library preparation for RNA-Seq, cell and tissue culture, nucleic acid isolation, qPCR, western blot, flow cytometry and ELISA. The Lab Assistant II will assist with media and buffer preparation and autoclaving, make routine analyses and record results in a notebook, help with equipment maintenance, and assist lab personnel in routine tasks to keep the research lab in smooth working order. The Lab Assistant II will maintain accurate records of all experiments assist with media and buffer preparation, learn and maintain laboratory equipment, have strong organizational skills to maintain lab stock databases, and work to ensure that laboratory spaces are clean, safe and compliant with University regulations. In addition, Lab Assistant II will occasionally need to transport biological specimens.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of college level coursework in cellular and molecular biology or related science and/or one year basic laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist the PI in research techniques in cellular and molecular biology.
  • Skill to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and productive manner.
  • Manual dexterity and legible handwriting. Perform general lab maintenance, including cleaning and restocking supplies and manage a regular schedule in the lab.
  • Demonstrated effective time management skills. Good organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and tasks and share knowledge to inform and teach students and paraprofessionals new techniques.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment such as confocal and quantitative fluorecent microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, balances, pH meters, and electrophoresis equipment.
  • Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel. Knowledge to work with and learn new software for analysis
  • Effective and diplomatic oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of personnel from different laboratories and instruct in optimal procedures for assays.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials. Demonstrated ability to assist in the writing of papers for publication, research proposals
  • Demonstrated skill to work with animals, as well as animal and human tissues.
  • Willingness and ability to work with rodents and/or other lab animals and/or infected samples, if required.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be available to work some weekends & evenings to complete experiments.
  • Must be willing and able to work with hazardous materials (biological and chemical).

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $43,159 – $50,738 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $20.67 – $24.30

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
