Pierce County Information Technology (IT) has an exciting IT Analyst internship opportunity that offers the chance to demonstrate their R programming as well as data extraction and transformation skills. Our internship provides a fantastic opportunity to work on real projects alongside data engineers / analysts and contribute to County business. The intern will develop R packages and write jobs to extract, transform and load (ETL) data and will gain an understanding of local government along the way! The skillset gained during the internship allows our students to enhance their resumes and enter the career market with more experience in the real world. How to be Successful in the Role:
A successful intern will have experience with R programming and extracting, loading, and working with data. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and a desire to help and support co-workers will be key. Training is primarily “on the job”, and you will be assigned an onboarding partner as your main “go-to person” for learning processes and procedures.
Your Future in this Role:
Our internship provides a great professional beginning for anyone learning about data analytics and developing their skillset with building reusable processes and tools. Your work will directly impact your community and it offers a great foundation for future positions within the IT Division and Pierce County.
Core Daily Responsibilities:
- Migrating ETL processes to new environment, with the possibility of further work in this area.
- Developing R packages that will enhance processes for the IT Data Services Team.
- Reporting status at regularly scheduled team meetings.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- IT / Data Analytics background AND
- 6 months of experience extracting, loading, and working with data AND
- 6 months of experience working with R.
- Preference for SQL, GIT, or Pentaho skills.

Extra hires are eligible to receive sick leave in accordance with the WA State Minimum Wage Act. Extra hires are not eligible for other County benefits.
Social Security
All Pierce County employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The county and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
Retirement and Deferred Compensation
Pro-tem Judges in District Court, Pro-tem Superior Court Commissioners, Extra Hires with Retirement, and Work Study Students with Retirement are eligible for Retirement and Deferred Compensation and Social Security.
