Position Description
Our full-time faculty positions provide instruction in traditional and nontraditional modalities which include fact to face instruction, online instruction, and blended instruction for chemistry courses starting. In addition to teaching, instructors must maintain 10 weekly office hours which are convenient for students.

Please note, we are currently hiring two full-time positions to start in our Fall semester. Knowledge of or willingness to learn, forensic chemistry preferred for one of those positions. A good general chemist or a physical chemist is preferred for the second position.

Location/Hours:
May provide instruction at Stark State Canton campus or Stark State Akron campus, as well as through online/hybrid courses. Ideally the candidates in this position will start their employment mid August, a few weeks prior to the start of classes (August 28, 2023).

Typical Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide a well-designed course based on high impact practices in the field of higher education.
  • implement teaching strategies that will assist chemistry students in meeting the course objectives and program outcomes and evaluate each student’s achievement and progress.
  • Model professional behavior, maintain lab safety, and assess the course and students to find areas of improvement.
  • Full-time faculty in the chemistry program are required to maintain a load of student advisees and actively participate in the division advising process to ensure students are on track with their degree attainment.
  • Assist in college services and outreach activities, including STEM outreach, and marketing of the program.
  • Expected participation in department, division, and college committees or groups.

To be Considered You’ll Need:

  • Master’s degree in chemistry, or a master’s degree in any discipline and 18 graduate credit hours that would lead to a master’s degree in chemistry
  • PhD in Chemistry is preferred, although not required
  • Requires a minimum of one (1) year of teaching experience, preferably in chemistry (graduate teaching experience may count towards this requirement, as appropriate)

STATE TEACHERS RETIREMENT SYSTEM (S.T.R.S.)

State Teachers Retirement System
The (STRS), was established to provide a secure retirement for Ohio’s public educators. STRS is available to all faculty members. The College contributes 14% of the employee’s wages for the retirement benefit and the employee contributes 14% of their wages toward the retirement benefit.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEES

All instructional and general fees for credit, audit, or non-credit courses offered at Stark State College will be paid by the College from the income of the College budgeted for employee benefits up to an amount per academic semester not to exceed such fees for six credit hours per semester.

A part-time employee may enroll in any section or course on a space-available basis. To qualify for this benefit, employees:

  1. Shall take the course(s) during a semester in which they are currently working.
  2. Shall have instructed a minimum of 8 credit hours or 13 CEUs at Stark State College or if paid hourly, worked a minimum of 320 hours before receiving this benefit.
  3. Must obtain the approval of their supervisor. Employees paid on an hourly basis shall refer to the minimum hours worked requirement to qualify for the benefit. The employee’s primary position during the semester the benefit is used determines the employee’s eligibility.

Eligible part-time employees desiring this benefit must complete an Instructional Fee Waiver form available on mystarkstate and must submit it to the employee’s supervisor for approval.

Instructional fees are available for IRS dependents of part-time employees. All instructional and general fees for credit, audit, or non-credit courses offered at Stark State College will be paid by the College from income of the College budgeted for employee benefits for dependents of part-time employees for six semester hours per academic year per employee.

Dependents of part-time employees may enroll in any section or course on a space-available basis. The student will be required to pay the processing fee and all other incidental fees associated with the course enrolled in each semester.

Dependents of employees classified as student workers, substitute workers, or seasonal workers will not be eligible to participate in this program. Dependents of part-time employees who are eligible for tuition waivers such as College Credit Plus, various scholarships and grants, and other such nonloan programs must use those funds prior to use of the Instructional Fee Waiver benefit.
