South Dakota State University (SDSU) Research Cyberinfrastructure (RCi) (Research Computing) within the Division on Technology and Security (DTS) is pleased to announce an exciting career opportunity as an HPC Software Development Engineer (Research Facilitator). We are seeking a creative and innovative professional to join our team.

As a member of our team, you will play a crucial role in assisting the research and educational communities with research cyberinfrastructure support. You will provide SDSU and the South Dakota Board of Regents user communities with software development engineering support for applications, programs, and programming languages to aid in the resolution of research problems that rely on high-performance computing services.

The SDSU Research Cyberinfrastructure team removes obstacles to research achievement by offering computational skills to support researchers across all disciplines. This position will be integral to this group of professionals sharing and utilizing cross-disciplinary computational techniques in new and developing fields. This position will collaborate closely with faculty, students, postdoctoral researchers, and I.T. colleagues to facilitate and expedite research application-related solutions to solve research problems.

This position is a 12-month, 100%-time, benefit-eligible and is supervised by the Assistant Vice President for Research Cyberinfrastructure. This position has the flexibility for a hybrid or a remote location. If hybrid or remote, it will be expected for this position to be on campus in Brookings, SD, quarterly.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position will support the SDSU and SDBOR education and research communities with activities that include developing and implementing research computing applications and software programs. The position’s duties will also require training in high-performance computing application areas related to institutional research needs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS or BA degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline by date of application.
  • At least three years of experience in research computing or a closely related area.
  • High-Performance Computing (HPC) application programming experience developing applications within a cluster system or a single server environment.
  • An understanding of basic Linux system command-line utilities.
  • Knowledge of any cloud computing providers such as the NSF-funded Access (XSEDE) program, National Research Platform, the Open Science Grid, or commercial cloud products.
  • Positive customer service skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MS, MA, Ph. D, or a DSc in Computer Science or a closely related.

  • Globus, SFTP, or similar.
  • Experience supporting HPC within Higher Education.
  • Experience training users on how to use HPC applications and programs.
  • Experience contributing as a team member on projects.
  • Research computing/related outreach experience
  • Experience using the Slurm cluster resource manager.
  • Parallel File storage system experience.
  • Experience with GPU computing (AI: machine learning)
  • Experience writing grant proposals or publications.
