High Voltage Electrician (GU)

In this role, theHigh Voltage Electrician will be responsible for the safe, legal, reliable, and cost-efficient operation and maintenance of the High Voltage Electrical System, supplying power to all University (including Medical Center), and hospital buildings. The High Voltage Electrician will also be responsible for the electrical power from PEPCO’s six incoming connections at 13,800 volts to the main low voltage switchboard in each building including electrical metering and the quality of the power. This position is located in Washington D.C. and reports to the High Voltage Supervisor.

What you’ll do:

  • Review single-line drawings to operate the high voltage system in support of PEPCO, contractors, and our preventive maintenance program
  • For this position, you must have evidence of right to work in the U.S. There is no employer sponsorship of U.S. residency or work authorization with this role.
  • Support contractors in the preventive maintenance of all system components, circuit breakers, cable, transformers, relays, meters, and switchboards.
  • Switch building power and 13 KV feeder distribution circuits in support of planned repairs and upgrading of equipment.
  • Monitor power usage, install, test, repair, and read electrical meters and other recording devices.
  • Operate, maintain, chiller switchgear, transformers, switches in the Heating/Cooling Plant. Maintain station batteries.
  • Respond to unplanned emergency outages 24/7 affecting hospital, campus, and medical facility buildings on the High Voltage system. Assisting other departments needing our expertise.
  • Willingness to develop technical proficiency in some software applications (Maximo, SAP, ADP etc.)
  • Must have valid driver’s license.

What you bring:

  • High School Diploma, or GED
  • 2+ years’ experience as a journeyman electrician
  • Knowledge of trade math
  • Possess a DC Journeyman Electrician’s License
  • Knowledge of the DC Electrical Code, National Electrical Code, the National Electrical Safety Code, and the Electrical Equipment Maintenance Code
  • Electrical Safety Training

  • Designated as an emergency employee and must report to work regardless of the university’s operating status.
  • Must be capable of supporting snow removal operations
  • Ability to adhere and understand NFPA 70E safety standards
  • Ability to follow directions, when using designated high voltage protocols
  • Requires the incumbent to operate commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10K+ (e.g., tow trucks, box trucks, trash trucks, buses, lifts, etc.). As such, the incumbent must possess a medical card and/or certificate issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), which is issued by a licensed “medical examiner,” after completion of a DOT physical examination
  • Hard work ethic, self-starter, can-do attitude
  • Work from drawings and be capable of systematically and logically locating the problem when drawings are not available
  • Strong adherence to planned maintenance protocols
  • Work with others to detect problems, implements and communicate solutions
  • Work experience in some cable splicing or certifications
  • Must be able to use all common hand tools, manual pipe benders, pipe threading machine, drill press, electric drills, hand drills, multimeters.

  • Salary Range: $47,090 – $112,710 USD annually
  • Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors
