PRIMARY PURPOSE
Supervise and take responsibility for on-site leadership of day-to-day grounds maintenance operation ensuring that district grounds are safe, neat, and attractive.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED

Valid Texas driver’s license

Certifications or licenses related to skill preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of landscape maintenance
  • Knowledge of integrated pest management (IPM)
  • Ability to read and interpret landscape plans
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to direct and supervise personnel
  • General knowledge of other crafts used in building and grounds repair and maintenance
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate and interact with others effectively (verbally)
  • Ability to operate hand, power, and driving tools and equipment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to manage personnel regarding grounds-specific work projects
  • Effective planning and organizational skills

Experience:

  • Five years’ experience in grounds maintenance required
  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • One year experience in general building/facilities maintenance preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Grounds Maintenance and Landscaping

  1. Assign all grounds work and oversee completion. Arrange for contract labor when work cannot be performed by district staff.
  2. Assign priority to work orders and process them, including tracking of labor and material use.
  3. Act as the District’s Integrated Pest Management Coordinator.
  4. Interpret plans and sketches to carry out landscape designs.
  5. Establish and maintain care and watering schedules, including spraying, fertilizing, and pruning, Install, test, adjust, and repair sprinkler systems as needed.
  6. Inspect grounds and facilities and initiate needed repairs, including the building and repair of fences and gates. Estimate the cost and time required for projects and order materials.
  7. Communicate as needed with the Assistant Director of Facilities regarding supplies and other budget items in order to ensure that the District has sufficient supplies and materials.
  8. Be available (24/7) to oversee emergencies in case of malfunction or unforeseeable problems (such as weather-related/cleaning or maintenance).

Safety

  1. Provide training and orientation to all grounds personnel in safety procedures and proper and safe use of tools and equipment.
  2. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  3. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  4. Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding equipment and facilities.
  5. Maintain current knowledge and certification on regulation mandates of grounds maintenance (such as pest management).

Inventory and Equipment

  1. Prepare, implement, and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for tools and equipment. Ensure that maintenance is completed and vehicles and equipment are in safe operating condition. Recommend replacement of existing equipment when necessary.
  2. Monitor the storage and use of all grounds equipment, tools, and supplies. Conduct regular inventory of physical equipment and supplies, order equipment and supplies when needed, and maintain accurate records.

Other

  1. Respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
  2. Assist in preparation of department budget.
  3. Assist in recruiting, screening, training, and evaluation of grounds employees.
  4. Maintain accurate information for payroll reporting (time cards, tardiness, and absenteeism).
  5. Work flexible irregular hours according to DSISD and Facilities & Construction Schedules as needed and respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Monitor the work and issue work assignments to grounds crews. Assist in hiring, supervision, and evaluations of grounds crews.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Frequent grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching. Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds or more) on a regular basis. Ability to operate hand, power, and bench tools. Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions; outside and inside; on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; on ladders, and scaffolding; and around machinery with moving parts. Exposure to hot and cold temperatures and excessive noises. Frequent districtwide travel.
