Summary
This role works jointly with Michigan News in the Office of the Vice President for Communications and the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies in the International Institute. Participates in both units to connect people across the world with a shared commitment to, and interest in, the multiple ways greater China and the University of Michigan are making an impact in the world together. The PR Rep for Chinese Communications will work collaboratively and creatively to raise awareness and build upon the reputation of the university as a world-class leader in research, expertise, and academics.
Responsibilities*
Michigan News:
Responsible for planning, writing and disseminating news releases and feature stories and pitching faculty experts of interest to English and Chinese-language media in the U.S., greater China and beyond. Creating and translating content from Michigan News writers as deemed appropriate for a Chinese audience. Duties will be accomplished through written communications and personal contact and include:
- Writing news releases in Chinese and English for media distribution and posting on the U-M Chinese website and the Global Michigan website and promoting on social media channels.
- Handling U-M Chinese channels such as social media platforms and contributing content regularly to the Global Michigan website.
- Developing relationships with news media in greater China.
- Arranging interviews with faculty experts/researchers for TV, newspaper, news blogs and radio stations in greater China.
- Meeting regularly with the Michigan News global team to strategize communications and coordinate outreach and timing of content.
- Engaging with faculty experts in greater China-related matters for expert advisories, videos, social media, and other methods of outreach.
- Staying abreast of breaking news and ongoing issues in greater China and around the world.
- Advising leaders on best communications methods for major announcements and trips abroad.
- Preparing regular reports to track impact in the news media.
- Facilitating the dissemination of faculty research and activities in greater China by liaising with faculty and students visiting greater China and alumni in the region.
Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies:
Responsible for managing Center communications to internal audiences, alumni and donors related to greater China. Works closely with center leaders and faculty to coordinate and produce high-quality informational media on all Chinese-related activities, both in greater China and on campus, which includes:
- Actively seeking out information on greater China-related activities from partners across campus.
- Developing strong relationships at Michigan with colleagues and soliciting information from Center-affiliated faculty and partners.
- Attending lectures and Chinese-related activities across campus (and providing real-time information on those through social media).
- Assisting with all LRCCS communications including writing content for sharing and posting
- Consolidating communication across U-M schools involved in teaching, research, engaged learning, and partnerships in greater China.
Required Qualifications*
- A bachelor’s degree and at least five years of experience in journalism or public relations.
- Experience with and a strong knowledge of news organizations in greater China.
- Fluency in written and spoken Chinese.
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, including excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to perform in a self-directed manner within a team-focused framework.
- Proven time management and organization skills.
- Knowledge and experience in social media.
Desired Qualifications*
- Knowledge of higher education systems and environment, through employment either at a university or a related business or organization.
- Experience working with videographers and photographers.
- Experience with news media.
