Job Description Summary
The Social Media Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the operations and activities of Chapman University’s Guggenheim Gallery, with a primary focus on creating engaging and compelling content for the gallery’s social media platforms. This position offers an excellent opportunity for students interested in digital marketing, contemporary art, gallery management, and arts administration to gain hands-on experience within a dynamic and vibrant campus art space. The Social Media Specialist will assist in various aspects of gallery operations while promoting the gallery’s exhibitions and events through social media.
Responsibilities
Visitor Engagement:
Welcome and engage with gallery visitors, providing information about current exhibitions and artists.. Ensure a positive and welcoming gallery experience for all visitors. Answer questions and provide insights into the exhibited artworks when appropriate.
Gallery Maintenance and Artwork Installation:
• Assist in the setup, installation, and deinstallation of exhibitions, including handling and hanging artworks.
• Collaborate with the Gallery Director and artists to ensure the proper placement and display of artworks according to exhibition plans.
• Help prepare gallery spaces for exhibitions by painting walls, adjusting lighting, and ensuring the overall presentation meets gallery standards.
• Maintain the cleanliness and organization of gallery spaces, including galleries, lobby areas, and storage areas.
• Monitor and report any maintenance issues to the Gallery Director.
• Ensure that artworks are securely and safely installed, following best practices for artwork handling and display.
Artwork Handling and Security:
• Assist in the safe handling and transportation of artworks.
• Help implement gallery security measures, including monitoring gallery spaces during open hours.
• Ensure artworks are protected and handled according to gallery protocols.
Event Support and Social Media Management:
• Assist in the planning and execution of gallery events, such as exhibition openings, artist talks, and workshops.
• Help with event setup, guest registration, and event promotion on campus.
• Collaborate with gallery staff to ensure events run smoothly.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive social media strategy to promote gallery exhibitions and events.
• Create engaging content for the gallery’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and others.
• Monitor social media channels, respond to comments, and engage with the gallery’s online community.
• Track social media analytics to measure the effectiveness of promotional efforts.
Gallery Promotion:
• Contribute to the promotion of gallery exhibitions and events through social media, posters, and campus outreach.
• Assist in the development of promotional materials and strategies.
• Collaborate with the Gallery Director to align social media efforts with the gallery’s overall promotional goals.
Gallery Sales and Transactions:
• Facilitate art sales, including processing transactions and providing information to potential buyers.
• Assist with inventory management, tracking artworks on display and in storage.
Gallery Research:
• Conduct research on exhibiting artists, artworks, and art movements to enhance visitor knowledge.
• Prepare educational materials, labels, and guides for exhibitions.
Required Qualifications
• Currently enrolled as a student at Chapman University.
• Strong interest in digital marketing, contemporary art, gallery operations, and social media management.
• Proficiency in social media platforms and digital marketing tools.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
• Knowledge of art history, art theory, or studio art is a plus.
