Job Description
Interns at The Cook Political Report are responsible for a mix of short-term projects and daily administrative tasks, and are invited to attend meetings and any relevant virtual panels or press conferences.
Internship tasks range from the following tasks & projects, though the fall internship project will be designed with the intern’s specific skill set and areas of interest.
Research
• Compiling a list of campaign contacts / consultants working on major races.
• Learning to create a FEC report & pull ad spending data.
• Assisting with historical research of past US elections.
• Compiling candidate information to support CPR editorial projects.
Projects
• Assisting an editor on a project with a deliverable.
• Assisting with CPR archive development.
Content production and editing
• Learning AP style and providing copy editing support for the website.
• Supporting website content updates.
• Learning the basics of HTML and CMS
• Supporting social media campaigns
Admin and education
• Learning basic customer service skills and assisting subscribers with troubleshooting needs.
• Attending any virtual education seminars, press conferences or briefings.
Internal meetings
• Attending weekly staff meetings.
• Attending meetings with the supervising editor/mentor.
• Attending short weekly “coffee breaks” with the internship coordinator.
• Attending any training calls with editors to support efforts on their weekly projects and tasks.
Requirements
This position can be a hybrid or in-person opportunity.
Ideal candidates are:
* Actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Government, Political Science or a related field of study.
* Experienced with spreadsheets (Excel, Sheets, etc) and digital publishing.
* Comfortable working independently
* Outstanding writers and digital content producers
* Capable of and committed to critical thinking through a non-partisan lens
* Located in the Washington DC area
* Available for a minimum of 5 hours/week for 8-10 weeks
