Description
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation is the only six-time national Gold Medal winner for excellence in parks and recreation management in the nation. The Department of Parks and Recreation provides comprehensive parks and recreation programs, facilities, and services which respond to changing needs within our communities.

The Southern Recreation and Leisure Services Division is currently seeking three experienced and talented Facility Directors to perform day to day management operational duties such as monitoring budgets, implementation of revenue generating programs and/or leisure activities geared to the community.

Please note that the above salary range represents earning potential. The budgeted salary range for this position is $57,357-$79,471 . Salary is commensurate with experience.
Examples of Important Duties

  • Manage community center. Establishes, recommends and monitors operating procedures (i.e., hours, building maintenance and repairs).
  • Supervise full-time (career), intermittent, volunteer, and contracted employees. Recruits, interviews, selects, and trains staff. Conducts performance appraisals. Counsels and disciplines employees.
  • Monitors fiscal requirements. Controls expenditures within approved budget for the facility assigned. Initiates purchase requisitions, check requests, and contracts.
  • Plans, schedules, and assigns work. Approves timecards and leave requests for career and seasonal staff.
  • Creates a comprehensive programming plan of classes, activities, and special events to serve the area. This includes creating, developing, implementing, marketing, and evaluating.
  • Community Relations. Meet with citizens, community groups, schools, and associations within service area.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of leisure and recreation services, business administration, social and cultural programs, safety and health regulations, supervision, budgeting and procurement, marketing and public relations, and relationship building.
  • Ability to apply principles to solve practical problems, read and prepare routine reports and correspondence, effective oral and written communication, prepare and market promotional materials, and provide courteous service.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree or four years experience in one of the following fields: parks, recreation, education, business administration, physical education, communication, leisure services, or in area of required specialty; and

2. Three years of progressive professional experience working in a facility related to parks, recreation, education, business administration, physical education, communication, leisure services, or area of required specialty, including one year as a facility manager, program coordinator or supervisor; or

3. An equivalent combination of education and experience; and,

4. A valid operating license (i.e., county pool operator’s license, child care license, etc.) where appropriate.

5. A valid driver’s license may be required.

  • Benefits paid at 66 2/3% of base salary that exceeds $108,000; capped at $216,000

Basic Life and AD&D Insurance (Employee Pays 20%: Commission Pays 80%)

  • Two (2) times base salary; maximum benefit is $200,000 for each
  • Automatic coverage with opt-out provision

Supplemental and Spouse/Dependent Life Insurance (Employee Pays 100%)

  • Supplemental – 1,2,3,4, or 5 times base salary; maximum benefit is $750,000
  • Spouse/Dependent Combination – $10,000/$5,000, $20,000/$10,000, or $30,000/$15,000

Sick Leave Bank (Contribution and Benefit hours prorated for part-time employees)

  • Employees have 60 days from date of hire to enroll.
  • Employee contributes 8 leave hours each year
  • Annually covers up to 688 hours for own serious medical condition, and 480 hours for parental responsibilities (birthadoption or foster care), and 80-160 hours for serious medical condition of an immediate family member
