DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions assigned to Facility Services Worker I perform work under general direction. The work is often routine. Incumbents must gain the experience needed to perform skilled tasks and to operate equipment and tools independently. Generally, these skills are attained within two years of the date of hire.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
- Receives guidance and training from positions in the Worker II and Lead classifications.
- Direct supervision is provided by the Facility Services Supervisor.

Essential Functions
- Assists in performing preventative and routine maintenance; makes repairs to appliances, plumbing, pumps, boilers and electrical fixtures; maintains and repairs and/or replaces of plumbing, heating, ventilation and electrical fixtures and systems; performs wiring, plumbing and carpentry.
- Assists in remodeling, repairing, and constructing such items as partitions, room additions, door hardware, counters, tables, book cases, floors, roofs and mechanical equipment.
- Assists with installing and repairing doors, locks and door hardware; performing keying and general locksmithing.
- Assists with installing, maintaining and repairing carpeting, floor tile, linoleum, wood floors, ceramic tile, and other floor coverings or finishes.
- Checks buildings and their systems for conditions that need attention and takes appropriate action to correct problems.
- Assists with replacing lamps and ballasts.
- Assists with performing maintenance and repairs on walls, windows, doors, roofs, and flooring.
- Assists with building tables, shelves, assembling furniture and other wood equipment and fixtures.
- Moves and arranges furniture and equipment as required.
- Picks up and delivers parts and supplies when needed.
- Assists with building and installing signs and bulletin boards.
- Performs work in accordance with sound safety practices and within expectations regarding customer service.
- Assists in stocking and monitoring building maintenance and custodial supplies and materials.
- Responds to afterhours emergency calls related to City properties.
- Create and update daily work orders.
- Regularly performs fundamental cleaning tasks across multiple smaller facilities and provides on-demand custodial services citywide.
- Skillfully handles power-cleaning machinery, mechanical buffing tools, and prepares cleaning solutions as instructed.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; and
- Some building maintenance experience; or
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability required to perform the job.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of:
- Standard hand and power tools and equipment used in facility maintenance activities.
- Basic recordkeeping procedures and electronic filing systems.
- Basic mathematics.
- Familiarity with standard tools and equipment used in custodial work, including brooms, mops, dust mops, vacuums, scouring devices, and wax applicators.
- Using computers and applicable software programs.
- Learn methods and procedures used in carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, mechanical, welding, and other trades work.
- Learn safety standards and regulations related to facility services.
- Learn methods and procedures of a general locksmith.
- Learn to operate equipment such as hand and power tools in a safe and effective manner.
- Read and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Read and understand warning labels.
- Work in accordance with safety rules and regulations.
- Learn to understand and interpret blueprints.
- Learn to estimate cost and materials.
- Learn to maintain accurate records regarding labor and materials.
- Work independently, or as a member of a crew.
- Communicate effectively with crew members, internal customers and the public.
- Work in inclement weather conditions.
- To quickly learn and apply vacuum cleaning methods and handle associated equipment effectively.
