The Ideal Candidate: The current vacancy is in the Facilities Division of the Public Works Department. In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications for this job classification, the ideal candidate for this position will possess journey level or professional maintenance experience with HVAC, Electrical and/or Mechanical Systems, including maintenance experience with commercial buildings and mechanical systems. Additionally, the successful candidate should have experience working for a public agency (e.g. City, County, State, Special District or public School District) in building maintenance.
DISTINGUISHED CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full journey level class of the equipment maintenance worker series. The Equipment Maintenance Worker II class is distinguished from the level I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, with only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise. Positions at this level are fully trained in the operation and maintenance of equipment and machinery commonly used in the performance of duties and are familiar with the procedures and policies of the equipment maintenance operation.

Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform various maintenance tasks within the equipment maintenance operation involving pumps, traffic signals, and street lighting systems.
- Trouble-shoot and evaluate maintenance and repair needs.
- Perform semi-skilled and skilled electrical and mechanical maintenance on City equipment including pumps, traffic signals and street lighting systems.
- Perform electrical system wiring and installations.
- Replace lights, ballasts, and fixtures.
- Service generating units, switches, circuit ‘breakers, and other electrical fixtures.
- Repair motors and pumps.
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on motors, pumps, and other equipment.
- Operate various types and pieces of equipment and machinery in the performance of job tasks including a bucket truck, boom truck, tractor, high-press water truck, testing equipment and simple mechanical tools.
- Utilize appropriate safety procedures and policies in the performance of tasks.
- Respond to emergency calls as need arises.
- Train and provide guidance to less experienced staff.
- Prepare and maintain appropriate records and reports.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience
- One year of responsible experience comparable to that of an Equipment Maintenance Worker I in the City of Milpitas, involving the servicing, maintaining, and repairing of pumps, motors, traffic signals, and street lighting systems.
Education:
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
- Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate, valid California Driver’s License; Class B with a Tanker endorsement within 1 1 months of appointment.
- Possession of or ability to obtain within two (2) years of appointment Grade D3 Water Distribution Certificate issued by the California Department of Health Services.
Supplemental Information
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision form the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, and indirect supervision from the Equipment Maintenance Worker IlI. May exercise technical supervision over less experienced staff.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment.

Work is mainly performed outdoors; ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, squat, kneel, crawl, bend, and stoop at any given time; able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds of weight throughout the day & occasionally up to 90 pounds; exposure to outdoor elements in all weather conditions throughout the year; exposure to confined spaces, hazardous waste, sewage, chemicals; walk on uneven surfaces; able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Milpitas.

RETIREMENT
Membership in CalPERS (2% at 60 or 2% at 62 with three year average salary). City of Milpitas employees do not participate in Social Security, but do contribute to Medicare. Additionally, members pay $2.40/per hour to the LIUNA pension fund.
MEDICAL INSURANCE
Choice of CalPERS Medical Plans. City pays coverage up to the Kaiser rate (currently $2,228.36/mo. for family). Employees who waive health coverage are eligible to receive $125 per month in lieu of medical plan coverage with proof of other coverage.
RETIREE MEDICAL
Employees are eligible upon CalPERS retirement from the City to receive up to 100% retiree medical coverage (currently based on the Kaiser health rate), based on years of service.
DENTAL & VISION
City provides full family coverage for Delta Dental and MES Vision at no cost to the employee.
LIFE INSURANCE
City provides $50,000 term policy. Supplemental employee-paid life insurance is available up to $500,000, based on carrier acceptance.
DISABILITY INSURANCE
City provides a Short-Term Disability plan similar to State Disability Insurance (SDI) coverage. Employees do not participate in SDI. Long-Term Disability coverage of 60% of base salary up to $1,500 per month is available after a 60-day waiting period. Additional buy-up options for LTD are available up to $6,000 per month.
VACATION
Hourly employees earn 11-31 days of vacation per year based on years of service.
HOLIDAYS
Employees receive 12 paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday per year.
SICK LEAVE
Employees earn 12 days annually.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
Employees are eligible to receive up to $1,400 per fiscal year in tuition reimbursement.
