Position Overview

The Illinois School for the Deaf is seeking to hire an educator to perform highly specialized teaching duties at the Jr/Sr High school level in academic areas. This position applies standard and special teaching methods and techniques in instructing students who are deaf and hard of hearing, some with secondary disabling conditions; adapts methods to meet the needs of the type of students encountered; and fosters discipline, good study habits and positive self-concept in the individual students being served.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs highly specialized teaching duties at the Jr/Sr High school level in academic areas.
  2. Prepares unit plans and lesson plans for subjects taught following Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD)’s prescribed curriculum.
  3. Prepares and coordinates assigned student Individual Educational Plan (IEP) which include the planning and conducting of annual reviews and IEP/Transition meetings.
  4. Evaluates programs.
  5. Prepares daily attendance reports of students.
  6. Attends and participates in discussions at regular teacher’s meetings, staff meetings, and in-service training.
  7. Supervises the care and use of equipment and supplies.
  8. Serves as an Eligibility Review evaluator of designated students to be assessed by the Evaluation Center staff.
  9. Assists in planning and participation of State mandated student assessment and benchmark testing.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires possession of a current and valid ISBE-issued Professional Educator License with a Special Education – Deaf and Hard of Hearing endorsement.
  2. Requires the ability to pass the manual communication proficiency interview (SLPI) at the Intermediate Plus level.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. One (1) year of professional experience communicating with and instructing deaf and hard of hearing students of varying academic and social/emotional abilities.
  2. One (1) year of professional experience communicating and instructing deaf students with secondary disabling conditions, including physical and/or intellectual disabilities.
  3. One (1) year of professional experience maintaining effective working relationships with professional colleagues, assigned students, and parents/families of assigned students.
  4. One (1) year of professional experience working with behavior modification programs for students.
  5. One (1) year of professional experience preparing written documentation related to student performance and education.
  6. One (1) year of professional experience operating a computer, including experience with technology-based educational tools and programs.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  2. Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
