Director, VAEL Laboratory

Overview

Vermont Environmental and Agriculture Laboratory (VAEL) is seeking a new Lab Director. If you have professional laboratory and supervisory experience with a knack for fiscal planning and policy interpretation this might be the opportunity for you!

The VAEL Director plans, organizes, and administers programs and functions of VAEL under the technical supervision of the AAFM Secretary as well as confers with all stakeholders who utilize laboratory services. Additionally, the VAEL Director coordinates laboratory functions and evaluates programs in relation to state and federal guidelines. The VAEL Director is also the point person for developing and monitoring the overall laboratory budget.

Hourly rates within the Classified Bargaining Unit Pay Plan will change effective July 2, 2023. At that time, the starting rate (Step 1) for this job opening will be $39.07 per hour.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed primarily in standard office and laboratory settings. Some travel to other laboratories and to the facilities of laboratory service users may be required, for which private means of transportation must be available. Some work outside of normal office hours may be required. Contentious negotiations on the scope and level of laboratory services may be encountered. Infrequent exposure to hazardous materials, infectious agents, and chemical toxins may occur.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in chemistry or microbiology OR equivalent area of study AND five (5) years or more of professional laboratory experience INCLUDING three (3) years or more of supervisory experience with professional laboratory staff.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or microbiology with 7 (seven) years or more of professional laboratory experience INCLUDING three (3) years or more of supervisory experience with professional laboratory staff.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in chemistry or microbiology or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or DVM-equivalent degree.

Experience with laboratory instrumentation including atomic absorptions, autoanalysers, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer, fluormeter and support equipment.

Familiarity with a commercial lab information management systems with includes electronic interfacing to the laboratory instrumentation, electronic reporting of lab results and the utilization of bar coding technology.

National certification for environmental analysis by the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference

Drinking water certification by the Vermont Department of Health.

Experience with EPA’s toxic organic (TO) and Inorganic (IO) ambient air analysis methods.

Familiarity with US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Laboratory Programs dealing with milk, meat, animal and plant disease testing; and US EPA programs with pesticide use/misuse and enforcement analysis.
