Novartis is seeking a Director, US External Engagement to Strengthen the Novartis reputation and help achieve our ambition of becoming a top 5 pharmaceutical company in the US by enhancing understanding of our leading portfolio, pipeline, culture, and access approach.

Contribute to the development and execution of the overall Novartis reputation and external communications strategy.

Lead external engagement for key therapeutic areas and corporate reputation topics in the US. Partner with key stakeholders to create best-in-class communications that help shape our narrative.

This position maybe based out of our East Hanover, NJ; Cambridge, MA; or Washington DC office.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Develop and execute impactful media relations strategy, initiatives, and events to strengthen understanding and recognition of Novartis strategy, priorities and corporate reputation topics in the US
• Partner with key therapeutic area (TA) teams to develop and execute best-in-class strategic, external communication programs – with a primary focus on media and influencers – in support of Novartis, its brands and pipeline products
– Shape media strategy and support outreach to generate positive coverage around launch and growth of brands, including key data and regulatory milestones, medical meetings, campaigns, and awareness initiatives
– Partner with TA communications leads, and across Novartis Communications & Engagement, on above-brand, disease area positioning strategies and storytelling
• Lead innovative campaigns and initiatives to shape and strengthen media, policymaker and influencer understanding of Novartis thought leadership in key priority and reputation topics, in partnership with Corporate Responsibility, Public Affairs, People & Organization and other key stakeholders
• Serve as a company spokesperson for Novartis. Develop and maintain strong relationships with top tier media, select stakeholder groups and key influencers in the healthcare space.
• Prepare executives for media interviews and other external engagement opportunities with effective briefing and message training
• Support issues management and crisis response. Provide strategic communications and issues management counsel to senior management and cross-functional network
• Lead capability building and develop tools and processes for key areas of functional excellence (e.g., trendspotting, influencer insights, media relations, social and digital, issues management, etc.)

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $174,400 and $261,600 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors

Minimum requirements

What you will bring to this role:
• 10+ years professional experience in communications or public relations in a major corporation, trade association or public relations agency.
• Experience working with senior level executives.
• Business acumen and understanding of pharmaceutical industry landscape, with strong knowledge of the US market.
• Media relations experience highly desired.
• Experience managing issues and crises effectively.
• Understanding of the social media and digital landscape and its influence on content
• Stakeholder relationship management (credibility with and ability to interact with influencers and others)
• Strategic business partnering experience, and a developed sense of customer service and ability to balance resource demands from multiple internal customers.
