Job Duties
Are you knowledgeable of strategic communication methods and procedures as they relate to public and media relations? Do you have experience coordinating high profile media and communication strategies with stakeholders to advance operational efforts and outcomes? Then look no further! The Virginia Department of Energy, Administration program, is seeking a Director of Strategic Communications to manage and coordinate statewide communications, social media, and strategic messaging related to the agency. This position will support the successful implementation of Virginia’s Energy Plan by strategically overseeing social media efforts, external outreach, and education related to energy policies and plans. This position will be responsible for ensuring that high profile administrative initiatives are strategically communicated to advance energy efforts that foster open and positive relationships with essential stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience in order to qualify for this position:
• Knowledge of communication methods and theories as they relate to public and media relations
• Ability to organize and synthesize complex issues into clear and concise content
• Ability to work independently, manage time, and meet established deadlines
• Ability to understand news media needs and provide content management for a website
• Understanding of media law and agency and state policies regulating release of public information
• Knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act and Public Records Act
• Ability to positively represent Virginia Energy plans and programs to the media, citizens, and elected officials
• Skills in writing for multiple audiences and familiarity with AP style guidelines
• Ability to use a computer and software applications to include various Adobe programs and MS Office Products
• Ability to use a digital camera for photography and videography
• Experience in public speaking and conducting media interviews
• Experience in professional social media marketing on various platforms
• Problem solver mentality with the ability to identify issues and provide solutions
• Results driven through prioritizing, taking initiative, and taking ownership
This position has been designated as required to file a Statement of Economic Interest in accordance with Section 2.2-3114 of the Code of Virginia. In addition, the individual accepted for employment will have to pass a drug test and successfully complete reference checks as part of the Virginia Energy pre-employment process.
