DESCRIPTION
The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Asst AD- Compliance. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, in the San Diego Metropolitan area, enrolls over 35,000 students, earned recognition as one of the world’s premier research universities, and is ranked as one of the top-10 public universities in the nation. UC San Diego Athletics has a proud tradition of academic and athletic excellence, sponsors 23 varsity sports, and is entering the third year of transition to NCAA Division I as a member of the Big West Conference.
Reporting to the Associate Athletics Director (AD)- NCAA Compliance, the NCAA Compliance Specialist is responsible for monitoring NCAA rules compliance and education programs. Responsible for the day-to-day oversight of selected aspects of the Intercollegiate Athletics Compliance Program, including understanding and monitoring recruiting matters, playing and practice seasons, camps and clinics, extra benefits, complimentary admissions, initial eligibility, admissions evaluations, and other compliance areas. Understand and apply NCAA rules to all assigned tasks. Develops rules education for coaches, student-athletes, prospects, staff and parents of student-athletes. Provides interpretations, prepares various NCAA and conference waivers and participates in investigations and self-reports. NCAA Compliance Specialist will also provide work direction to graduate-level compliance interns, as needed.

NCAA guidelines mandate that athletics activities shall be maintained on an ethical plane in keeping with the dignity and high purpose of education. It is expected that a high standard of personal honor, eligibility, and fair play is preserved, and any abuses will be remedied. Assures an effective compliance program, including strategies to reduce risk and emphasize early detection of potential NCAA, conference and University rules violations.
- Must be able to work periodic evenings, weekends and holidays. Must be willing to travel to out-of-town meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Thorough knowledge of program activity and best practices. Knowledge and skills to analyze, interpret, and review NCAA procedures to enhance monitoring of NCAA legislative compliance. Professional knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of NCAA athletics programs. Professional knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations related to academic eligibility, recruiting, amateurism, playing and practice seasons, and financial aid, among others.
- Problem-solving skills; multi-task, work with frequent interruptions, and effective listener. Proven ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret data and provide appropriate response utilizing campus/department resources for report preparation and correspondence, and implementation of policies and procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact in a positive manner with diverse clientele, using a high degree of confidence, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, patience and discretion in dealing with a diverse population of students, parents, staff, supporters, campus administrators, faculty and the general public.
- Advanced writing skills to independently draft correspondence and guidelines, pertaining to athletic operations, policies, and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and present educational and informational workshops and seminars to coaches and student-athletes regarding NCAA compliance, scholarships and student development services.
- Skill in reading and understanding complex and/or detailed documents such as NCAA and UC San Diego policies and procedures
- Ability to analyze and resolve special circumstances (non-routine) which are brought forth by colleagues, student-athletes and coaches, ensuring that the goals of the athletic program are met and that outcomes are within compliance.
- Knowledge of and experience with student financial aid programs, academic programs, and/or intercollegiate athletic programs.
- Ability to maintain equanimity while under the pressure of coordinating multiple projects and being subject to constantly changing priorities.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- A background check is required, a valid driver’s license is required. Must also participate in the DMV Pull program and maintain a clean DMV record.
- Must maintain NCAA certified recruiter status. Must maintain CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- This position is a mandated reporter of known or suspected child abuse or neglect, according to the California law, Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA).
- This position is a campus security authority (CSA) for the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, which is a federal law requiring disclosure of information about crimes on and around campus.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,600 – $111,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.67 – $53.45
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
