Director, Communications, HRET

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA has two main offices, located in Washington, D.C. and Chicago. We are currently seeking a Director, Communications, Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET), for our downtown Chicago office. This position is a hybrid role (three days in the office, two days working remote).

Starting base salary = $123,000 – $153,000 a year (commensurate with related experience).

The Director, Communications, Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET), directs and oversees communications that support grant-funded projects. Assists with development and coordination of communication strategies related to the work of the practice teams within the AHA’s Center for Health Innovation, including performance improvement and population health. Provides communications plans to support the work of AHA Funded Partnerships – a team that oversees AHA’s grant-funded projects designed to support key health care improvement initiatives which in the past have addressed issues such as pandemic response, infection prevention, health care worker suicide and age-friendly health systems. Leads internal and external team to execute the communications strategies in support of these programs and collaborates with the American Hospital Association (AHA) communications department to ensure that messaging is consistent and best practices are enforced. Develops innovative communication strategies that engage hospitals, health systems and others to create a society of healthy communities, where all individuals reach their highest potential for health.

  1. Develop communication strategies and campaigns for clinical performance improvement, population health and grant-funded projects. Works with senior leaders of AHA Practice Teams to ensure communication strategies are in alignment and support of AHA strategies and include high engagement and satisfaction of hospitals and health systems.
  2. Assemble and supervise communications resources – internal and external – to ensure the execution of communication strategies, vehicles and education tools, digital media and marketing are produced in a timely and impactful manner. These include (e.g., videos, podcasts, toolkits, whitepapers, guides, webinars etc.).
  3. Serve as day-to-day liaison with the AHA communications department. Ensure that communications strategies are aligned with AHA best practices and procedures are adhered to within AHA’s guidelines and standards. Ensures that messages are clear, thorough, on brand and preserve’s the organization’s image.
  4. Provide communications leadership, expertise and guidance and across all project teams for timing and content aligned with overall goals.
  5. Develop, monitor and analyze metrics to ensure that communications are meeting or exceeding goals to support engagement.
  6. Plan, develop and execute thought leadership event communication and marketing strategy and develop content themes and resources.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned by manager.
