Director/Assistant Director of Communications

The purpose of this position is to assist in the operation of the conference’s communications, both internally and externally. The Director/Assistant Director of Communications will publicize the WAC through all platforms including social mediaand the conference website. Specific duties include writing and producing press releases, compiling statistics, reporting results to media, maintaining record books and serving as a primary conference communications contact for several assigned sports. This position will assist staff members and also work independently in the administration of select conference activities and on-site championship management. The successful candidate will work with institutional communications directors, oversee conference communications at select championship events and work to develop and enhance relationships between the WAC and local, regional and national media. Other responsibilities may include tasks assigned by the Associate Commissioner of Communications and Assistant Commissioner of Communications.

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a major in communications, journalism, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years of increasing responsibility and practical experience in a media relations or sports information office.
  • Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, website management and NCAA statistical programs (NCAA LiveStats and/or Stat Crew/The Automated Scorebook) is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of, and demonstrated interest in, intercollegiate athletics. Experience working with a variety of constituencies (administrators, coaches, student-athletes) is desired.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team setting to efficiently meet established goals and deadlines.
  • Ability to independently write, edit and produce press releases and media guides.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication sk ills, strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects in a detailed manner.
