Responsibilities Include:

The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking project managers reporting to the MFC Project Division Director. If you want to be part of enabling nuclear energy research and development, including deployment of next generation nuclear reactors then this position is for you.

INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for the United States Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities, and infrastructure that enables research and development (R&D) of nuclear materials and fuels from design, development and fabrication, and post-irradiation analysis. In coordination with the National Reactor Innovation Center, MFC also plays a pivotal role in demonstrating new, advanced nuclear technology concepts. MFC’s diverse set of nuclear and non-nuclear facilities, coupled with the wide range of research and development activities conducted at MFC, requires close integration between project management, engineering, nuclear safety, and operations to ensure projects are driven in accordance with programmatic, technical, and regulatory requirements.

MFC Project Managers implement MFC’s management fundamentals (planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and assessing/improving) and establish and reinforce nuclear safety culture principles in execution of projects. Project managers are responsible for managing projects of all sizes ranging from small, task-oriented scope to medium sized construction or fabrication contracts, to nuclear facility instrument and equipment upgrades, to large general plant and line-item capital construction projects. Projects can include traditional construction projects, scientific equipment design and fabrication or modification, nuclear fuels’ research, development, and deployment, operations-based scope, waste management scope, utility and infrastructure repairs or installation, advanced reactor demonstrations, recapitalization of existing infrastructure, line-item capital construction projects establishing new capabilities, and everything in between. Project Managers are responsible for managing and administering a wide variety of projects from the conceptual stages through planning, engineering, procurement, execution, start-up, turnover, and operations, as applicable.

Key functions of the role are:

  • Provide leadership, integration, and strategic direction for assigned projects by communicating and integrating project activities with operations, engineering, safeguards and security, nuclear safety, construction management and other project support personnel
  • Responsible for employing technical comprehension of engineering, procurement, industry, and nuclear processes including their interfaces and interdependencies
  • Responsible for understanding specific requirements and related nuances for execution of scope within and around nuclear and radiological settings; actively engage and make decisions that could impact MFC’s nuclear facility operating posture
  • Responsible for identifying issues/concerns that could impede delivery of products and services and working closely with performing organizations to mitigate potential risks and to appropriately respond to challenges encountered during execution of work scope
  • Utilizes project management techniques and processes to assure technical, schedule, and budget baselines are established for assigned project; monitor progress to assure schedules are met and work is performed within budget
  • Manages work activities in compliance with INL policies and procedures, DOE Orders, and Federal, State, and Local regulations (where applicable), and Work for Other’s (WFO)/Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADA)
  • Resolves problems and coordinate operational requirements
  • Supports execution of assigned project portfolio of $3 – $10M
  • Supports other project managers in execution of strategic projects
  • Engages strategically within MFC and INL to develop teams for the successful execution of assigned projects
  • Provides regular project reporting in a variety of settings up to and including MFC and INL Management and DOE-ID

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS and 2-5 years relevant experience or Advanced Degree and 1-3 years relevant experience
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “Q” clearance, which requires US Citizenship

Preferred Requirements:

  • BS in technical/engineering discipline and 5-8 years relevant experience or Advanced Degree and 3-5 years relevant experience
  • Relevant experience includes nuclear and commercial/industry program and project management experience

Job Information:

  • Salary Grade 190 ($70,680 – $116,616)/210 ($93,492 – $154,212)
