SUMMARY:
The Community Nutrition Support Coordinator is a key position in Food Bank For New York City’s approach to ensure best practices and compliance in food safety and nutrition resource management within member food pantries and soup kitchens. By providing field-based, on-site engagement and monitoring visits at pantry and soup kitchens and conducting nutrition best practices workshops, this position supports efforts to ensure that food pantry clients receive equitable and complete food pantry distributions. Additionally, this position provides updates and reports on progress in ensuring nutrition best practices as well as provides engagement to Food Bank’s grant contacts that support implementation of the Nutrition Resource Management (NRM) elements of Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) funded by NY State Department of Health. Regular city-wide travel required to conduct in-person site visits and provide on-site support in the field.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as Food Bank’s internal contact on engagement of member food pantries and soup kitchens for educating and evaluating food safety and nutrition best practices
- Assist in educating emergency food program providers on HPNAP nutrition policies
- Provide technical assistance/training to staff on evaluating HPNAP prepared meals and food packages for compliance with HPNAP nutrition policies. Follow-up on food packages and meals that do not meet HPNAP minimum nutrition standards for meals
- Assess emergency food program food/nutrition education needs and develop at least 4 food/nutrition education workshops annually
- Assist in quality control of perishable/dated food products in contractor inventory: assess warehouse/food storage and handling practices; assist in moving food soon to expire by providing recipes and suggestions
- Provide technical assistance to contractor and emergency food programs regarding food product concerns such as food product dating, labeling, storage, food recalls
- Act as a consultant to internal staff regarding food safety and sanitation practices performed by organization and emergency food programs, assessing and providing food safety training as needed
- Conduct a minimum of 12 site monitoring visits to emergency food programs annually
- Assist emergency food programs in accessing other community sources of quality food and nutrition information and education
- Participate in emergency food program community and coalition meetings to understand current social and operational issues as well as promote nutrition services
- Participate in professional development activities to maintain current knowledge of community nutrition, public health and community food security issues
- Participate in NRM activities to assess the effectiveness of HPNAP food safety policies
- Promote a client choice environment including a sufficient variety of foods to satisfy the cultural and nutritional needs of individuals while reducing food waste
- Other projects and duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in food service administration, community nutrition, human nutrition, dietetics, public health, health education and/or an equitable degree from an accredited institution.
- At least two (2) years of professional, community nutrition related work experience.
- Ability to regularly travel throughout NYC and occasionally around the state.
- Demonstrated success and familiarity utilizing Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), familiarity and experience using cloud-based data tools preferred
- Experience working with, analyzing, interpreting and sharing quantitative data as well as interpreting and communicating written policies and procedures
- Strong problem-solving skills and approach; ability to multi-task, prioritize and work efficiently
- Ability to listen, communicate (written and verbal), and follow-up effectively with all staffing levels and external clients/customers.
- Excellent grammar, spelling and proofreading skills.
- Ability to work independently, be a self-starter, and energetically approach tasks assigned.
- Flexibility to adapt to all situations and work varied hours; possibly work weekends or evenings. Ability to perform at high levels in a fast-paced ever-changing work environment.
- Ability to anticipate work needs and follow through with minimum direction.
