Summary:
The College & Career Advisor primarily works closely with students and parents, and is responsible for guiding students in grades 10-12 through the college applications and financial aid processes. The Advisor will lead college & career readiness K-12 initiatives throughout the year, including presentations on financial aid, building a college list, scholarships, essay writing, and workplace skills.
Essential Duties:
- Provide one-on-one admissions and financial aid advice to any student or family seeking assistance
- Encourage each student to consider a broad range of appropriate college & career choices
- Guide students and their families through completing and submitting college admissions and financial aid applications
- Assist each student in interpreting correspondence from colleges, including offers of admission and financial aid
- Work closely with parents, providing a key point of contact between home and school, and serve as a designated point-person for all college admission-related questions
- Maintain a non-academic Canvas course with relevant asynchronous resources for students and their families to review at their own pace
- Keep detailed records of student interactions, college applications, awarded scholarships, and other post-secondary plans
- Compile and disseminate scholarship, internship opportunities, and summer program information to eligible students.
- Lead workshops for students on relevant topics throughout the school year, such as financial aid, scholarships, essay writing, and career readiness
- Appropriately advertise events to encourage attendance at college representative visits, college & career presentations, writing workshops, college fairs, and other related events
- Meet frequently with high school students, both one-on-one and in small groups, to give advice on academic and extracurricular choices and raise questions that encourage self-reflection and self-exploration
- Build partnerships with colleges that are best fits for our students by meeting with college representatives, visiting college campuses, and attending regional and national conferences.
- Map out a long-term strategy for supporting our increasing number of college-bound graduates.
- Work with school leadership to drive the teacher letter of recommendation writing process.
- Work with the graduation portfolio teachers to foster a strong career exploration program.
- Participate in faculty meetings and school-based professional development.
- Develop K-12 programming to inform students and parents about college options.
- Organize a virtual college fair in conjunction with the School Counselors.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of US colleges/universities and the college admissions process
- Student-centered, collaborative, and transparent leader who is accessible to students, parents, colleagues, and other key stakeholders and is adept at building relationships
- Superior internal and external communication skills, including written, verbal, and nonverbal expression
- Superior presentation skills, with experience in providing impactful and informative presentations
- Attention to detail, with strong organizational skills
- Use data effectively when making decisions
- Demonstrated success leading initiatives to defined and measurable outcomes
- Proficient to expert level skill level working with collaboration tools such as Google Suite, MS Office and ability to adapt and learn proprietary information systems used by PALCS
- High degree of emotional intelligence
- Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information with integrity
- Technology and marketing experience preferred
