DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this classification is to coordinate and supervise operations and staff involved in the operation, construction and maintenance of water collections systems for the Consolidated Government water utility. Reports to the Assistant Superintendent, Collection or other designated person. Works with co-workers, building contractors, utility company representatives, and the public to provide administrative and maintenance support. THIS POSITION REQUIRES OCCASIONAL HOLIDAY, NIGHTS AND WEEKEND WORK, AND 24/7 ON CALL DUTY.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
- Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work to team members. Prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives. Ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work. Monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work. Consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise. Provides progress and activity reports to Assistant Superintendent, Collections.
- Schedules, coordinates and participates in the installation, maintenance and repair of assigned water collection systems. Installs and repairs lift stations, force sewer mains, gravity sewer mains, manholes, laterals, sewer taps, septic tanks, drain fields, air relief valves, sewer siphoning systems, backflow prevention systems, irrigation and sprinkler systems.
- Utilizes the computer-based work order maintenance management system to enter data for all work orders, completed maintenance and repairs, equipment, parts and supplies used. Verifies entries for completeness and accuracy. Orders parts and supplies as needed.
- Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department projects, which may include a service truck, track hoe, backhoe, ditch machine, skid steer loader, camera truck, water jet, sewer line rapid assessment tool (SLRAT), Geographic Information System (GIS) tremble unit,, dump truck, Vac-con truck or other machinery.
- Ensures adherence to established regulatory requirements and safety procedures. Monitors work environment and the use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. Conducts safety meetings and training as needed. Enrolls staff in required job related classes. Responds to safety violations, accidents and injuries. Participates in accident review boards as needed and maintains all related documentation.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High School Diploma or GED. {Please note: Upon job offer, you will be required to provide proof of education. Be sure to have the appropriate documents readily available.}
Preferred: Vocational or technical training in water collection systems.
Experience: Three (3) years in water collection systems operation, construction and maintenance, plumbing and/or contracting services; previous experience with operating heavy equipment.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of wastewater collection system operations
- Considerable knowledge of collection system maintenance and repair.
- Considerable knowledge of maintenance practices, general codes and ordinances pertaining to the operation of sewer collections and construction maintenance activities.
- Considerable knowledge of interrelated operations of pumps, electrical motors, gasoline engines, control valves, and related collection systems.
- Familiarity with Augusta-Richmond County Utilities collection system and codes and ordinances pertaining to wastewater construction and maintenance.
- Proficiency in supervision, reading blueprints, maps, GIS, and must be familiar with computer systems.
- Mastery of operating tools, machinery, and equipment associated with water and sewer activities.
- Demonstrates the ability to work independently.
- Proficiency in supervision, reading blueprints, and performing standard mathematical calculations.
- Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
- Resolves technical problems.
Certification: Must possess and maintain the Wastewater Collection Certification through Georgia State Board of Examiners. Will attend classes and/or seminars to maintain certification.
Licensing Requirements: Possession of a valid driver’s license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment. ***This position requires driving a county vehicle.***
