The Nevada Supreme Court invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Chief Assistant Clerk. Under the general direction of the Clerk of Court, the Chief Assistant Clerk plays a critical role in managing the caseload and administering the docket of the Court of Appeals. Example of Duties
- Caseload and Docket Management: Efficiently manage the caseload and docket of the Nevada Court of Appeals to minimize delays and ensure equitable distribution of workload.
- Chambers Case Management: Oversee monthly assignment of chambers cases, record argument determinations, schedule cases for arguments or conferences, and assist in reallocating caseload as needed.
- Conference Coordination: Prepare agendas for judges’ draft conferences and serve in a confidential capacity during draft and post-argument conferences. Record judges’ votes and deliberations and ensure proper filing of decisions.
- Court Session Support: Attend court sessions, maintain minutes of oral arguments, and draft notes for case conferences.
- Statistical Reporting: Prepare monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual statistical reports to inform strategic decision-making.
- Communication: Respond to telephone and written inquiries from attorneys, litigants, and judges, providing valuable insights and information.
- Substitute Judge Management: Manage the appointment of substitutes for disqualified judges, including District Judge appointments requiring the Governor’s order. Coordinate written materials, notify substitutes of argument or conference dates, and arrange office space and staff assistance as necessary.
- Collaboration: Interact with and advise judges, law clerks, and other Court of Appeals staff on case processing concerns, contributing to the efficient operation of the court.
- Document Oversight: Oversee Clerk’s office editing of Court of Appeals opinions and orders, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal standards.
- Emergency Filings: Handle emergency filings assigned to the Court of Appeals for resolution, demonstrating your ability to manage time-sensitive matters effectively.
- Publication Process: Assist in processing Court of Appeals opinions for publication, enhancing the court’s commitment to transparency.
- Decisional Track Recommendations: Assist with the screening of cases for decisional track recommendations, ensuring alignment with court rules.
- Committee Participation: Engage in various internal and external court committees focused on the revision of court rules, information technology matters, and other administrative and operational functions.
Typical Qualifications
- Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate is required.
- Prior appellate court experience is required.
- A valid license to practice law in Nevada is required.
