General Summary

Under the supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director, mows and trims grass and performs other tasks in maintaining the County Parks. Installs and maintains equipment and assists in maintaining facilities, vehicles, mowers and other equipment. Assists the Parks Operations Manager in the execution of special parks projects including design, installation and maintenance.

Employees hired after or employed as of February 1, 2023, are eligible to receive a retention stipend of $2,500 if they remain employed as of July 31, 2023. Employees who remain employed through January 31, 2024, will receive an additional $2,500.
Essential Functions

  1. Operates tractors, riding mowers, power mowers and hand equipment to trim grass, trees, shrubs and hedges. Installs landscape timbers, spreads wood chips and performs other landscaping tasks.
  2. Removes brush, dead trees and other debris from grounds. Operates chainsaw and other power equipment.
  3. Operates front-end loader and uses other equipment in repairs and improvements within the Parks Department.
  4. Assists in the construction of equipment and facilities, includes assembling and maintaining playground equipment, signs, footbridges, trails, parking barriers, picnic tables, grills, stairways, building equipment and structures. Utilizes a variety of power tools.
  5. Performs maintenance tasks such as equipment repair, carpentry, painting, masonry, landscaping, erosion control and plumbing as needed for parks operations.
  6. Operates plow truck and snow blowers to remove snow from County Parks parking lots and roadways. Shovels trail staircases and other areas inaccessible to power equipment.
  7. Performs maintenance on departmental vehicles and equipment, includes changing oil, changing filters and lubricating, changing fluids, sharpening blades and wiring trailers. Performs more involved maintenance tasks such as tune-ups, brake jobs, and other tasks that can be performed with departmental equipment.
  8. Cleans shelters, restrooms and other facilities and replenishes supplies.
  9. Enforces park rules and regulations, referring serious problems to the Parks Operations Manager and/or law enforcement agencies.
  10. Assists Parks Operation Manager on larger projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Reading skills and ability to comprehend equipment manuals, instructions and safety information and government regulations.

Some prior experience which could include classes in grounds maintenance, welding, plumbing, carpentry, electrical and including the operation of equipment similar to that needed to ensure clean and welcoming parks.

Possession of a valid Michigan Driver’s License with a good driving record. Certified by the State as a Pesticide Applicator within one year of employment. Will be required to work weekends and holidays, as well as on-call needs.
