POSITION SUMMARY/CLASS DESCRIPTION
Do you like being active and making a positive impact in the life of a child? Howard County Recreation and Parks is currently seeking energetic, talented, active and positive staff for our Before and After School Child Care Programs located throughout the County at local elementary schools.
Work hours are 7-9:30 AM and/or 3-6 PM; Mon thru Fri. it is preferable that potential candidates be available for morning AND afternoon shifts. If not, they must be available every morning OR afternoon for program consistency. Free training and PTO leave available. For those who work morning and afternoons, Monday -Friday, part-time benefits are available once teacher qualified.
Daily responsibilities include working with youth ages 5-10 by:
- Planning and/or leading organized games
- Hands-on projects – arts/crafts, healthy food activities and science projects
- Preparing snack
- Assisting with homework and other duties as needed
- Previous leadership or teaching experience preferred, but all candidates must be comfortable being active with children and being a positive role model. Special consideration will be given to candidates with a background in physical education, recreation, exercise and sports science or related fields.
Salary range is $17.00 – $22.00 depending on experience, position acquired and age:
- Aide – Minimum age 16; no experience necessary; pay rate $17.00.
- Assistant Teacher – Minimum age 18; combination of child care experience &/or child care classes; pay rate $17.50.
- Teacher – Minimum age 19; Must have 90 hour child care certification (45 hours in Growth & Development AND 45 hours in School Age Curriculum or equivalent) AND 400 hours supervising school aged children; pay rate $18.00.
- Teacher Director Qualified – Minimum age 19; Must have 135 hours child care certification (45 hours in Growth & Development, 45 hours in School Age Curriculum AND 45 hours in Child Care Administration or equivalent) AND 400 hours supervising school aged children; pay rate $19.00.
Director Qualified – Minimum age 19; Must have 135 hour child care certification (45 hours in Growth & Development, 45 hours in School Age Curriculum AND 45 hours in Child Care Administration or equivalent) AND 400 hours supervising school aged children; starting pay rate $22.00.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. All applicants must successfully pass a criminal background check.
2. All staff must successfully pass additional trainings required by The Office of Child Care within first 3 months of employment. All provided at no cost to employee:
- Including All Children and the ADA
- Basic Health and Safety
- Covid-19 training
3. Teacher qualified staff and above MUST have successfully completed:
- 90 hours of approved school-age child care training in the areas of School Age Curriculum and Growth & Development, including 9 clock hours of training in communication with staff, parents, and the public. Including All Children and the ADA training class, Basic Health and Safety and Covid-19 training.
- Must have at least 400 hours of work experience with school-age children.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS
All applicants must have OR be able to obtain certification in Standard First Aid, CPR, Basic Health & Safety Training and Covid-19 training. The before and after school care programs are licensed through the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Office of Child Care (OCC) and staff are required to take continuing education units each school year (ranges from 6-12 hours) per school year.
