Banquet Captain | Part Time | Central Washington State Fair

Overview

OVG Hospitality, the exclusive caterer at State Fair Park and the Yakima Valley SunDome is currently seeking an experienced Banquet Captain to join our expanding culinary, special events and catering services team. We are outfitted with unique, versatile, and functional indoors and outdoors dining areas and venues as well as a state-of-the-art kitchen and host some of the most high-profile events the Valley.

The Banquet Captain is responsible for planning and supervising banquet events for our operation; including overseeing setup and breakdown of dining and bar service areas, interacting with clients and hosts, training, assigning, and monitoring service and support staff to ensure guest satisfaction and service standards are met or exceeded at every event.

The Banquet Captain must be personable and able to work in an ever- changing fast-paced environment.

The Banquet Captain must maintain excellent attendance and be available to work events as scheduled per business needs.

This role will pay an hourly wage of $20 to $22.00 (participation in house gratuity pool)

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with the event host on all aspects of the banquet function.
  • Performs planning and organization of functions for the banquet department.
  • Checks banquet rooms, service, and kitchen functions for the banquet department.
  • Oversees all aspects of assigned banquet function activities, ensuring that food areas are properly set-up and ready for execution at the appointed time.
  • Ability to respond quickly and accurately to guests’ requests.
  • Displays good customer relation skills and take initiative to greet guests.
  • Plan the event course and orchestrates its completion in a timely manner.
  • Observe guests to fulfill any additional requests, to perceive when the next course should begin, or when the meal is completed.
  • Adheres to all banquet standards and policies and procedures.
  • Supervises and trains staff in the set-up and breakdown of assigned banquet rooms according to contract and managers instructions.
  • Supervises and monitors staff in the service of food and beverages according to our standards.
  • Discuss last minute changes with the banquet team.
  • Maintains constant contact with the banquet chef, to ensure conclusion between food production and food service.
  • Assist in or conducts pre-meal and post-meal meetings.
  • Have complete knowledge of all food and beverages items on the event menu.
  • Maintain an open line of communication with Management.
  • Maintain a positive and professional demeanor during all interactions with guest, fellow team members, and vendors.
  • Ability to accept performance feedback in a professional manner.
  • Arrive on time and regular attendance to all scheduled shifts is considered an essential function of the job.
  • Ensure that all OVG and venue policies, procedures and practices are adhered to, including compliance with alcohol service and food handling / sanitation guidelines, general safety policies and procedures. Report any alcohol service or other compliance issues to GM immediately.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At Least 3 years’ experience working in a banquet captain capacity in a fast-paced catering or restaurant environment or applicable Education.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to develop, adhere to and present OVG service training materials to service staff in formal and informal settings, monitoring development and providing feedback and coaching.
  • Ability to communicate with employees, co-workers, volunteers, management staff and guests in a clear, business-like, and respectful manner which focuses on generating a positive, enthusiastic and cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to speak, read and write in English.
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented, fast-paced, event-driven environment.
  • Possess valid food handling certificate or alcohol service permit if required by state or federal regulations.
  • Ability to calculate basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages) as they relate to POS cash/credit transactions, cash reconciliation and product inventory.
  • Ability to operate and or learn front of house POS systems, Catering BEO software, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays, with variable overtime.
  • High School Diploma and/or GED preferred.
