Our Organization and Mission: The Office represents the State of Florida in state and federal civil and criminal courts, from trial courts to the Supreme Court of the United States.

Pay: $80,000 annually

Position Summary: This position is in the Civil Litigation Tallahassee Bureau.

Qualifications: Admission to the Florida Bar and six years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law or in administrative or judicial hearings; two years of which must have been in a supervisory or managerial position.

The Work You Will Do: The duties of this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Assists the Bureau Chief with the supervision and oversight of the Civil Litigation – North Florida Bureau.
  • Provides backup to the Bureau Chief for administrative duties necessary to the operation of the Bureau, including the review and assignment of all new litigation matters, personnel matters which include, but are not limited to, hiring new personnel (i.e. creating job descriptions, interviewing applicants, and preparing hiring packages); provides input as to annual evaluations; prepares case audits; coordinates the internship program and supervises interns.
  • Responsible for mentoring new attorneys and staff members, providing hands-on training, and reviewing attorney and staff member work product for competency.
  • Manage and evaluate paralegals and legal assistants including working directly with paralegals and legal assistants to ensure compliance with Bureau and Division policies and procedures.
  • Advises the Bureau Chief regarding issues affecting the Bureau and provides recommendations for improvements.
  • Prosecutes and defends civil litigation on behalf of state agencies and officials in state and federal trial courts and appellate courts including researching and drafting motions, answers, replies, interrogatories, memoranda, briefs, opinions, orders and other miscellaneous pleadings and documents; attends trials, hearings and appellate oral arguments; performs investigations and conducts related discovery; and provides legal advice and information to the client.
  • Maintain current expertise in relevant practice areas, including staying abreast of judicial decisions, attending continuing legal education and other professional seminars.
  • Assist in conducting legal training for the Bureau and Division, as requested by Bureau Chief and Associate Deputy.
  • Performs related duties as needed or directed by the Bureau Chief and acts on behalf of the Bureau Chief as directed or assigned in the Bureau Chief’s absence.
