Why does the job exist?
The position represents the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) in matters involving employment and labor law, civil rights, torts, administrative law, and as otherwise assigned.
How does it get done?
This position will provide the highest level of legal services, perform legal research, advise administration on matters of law and policy, and represent the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) in both civil and administrative legal matters; including in litigious areas of civil rights, personnel, labor relations, torts, collections, and administrative law.
The ideal candidate will both assist and act as lead counsel in complex litigation, determine legal position and strategy, assess litigation risk, draft and file legal documents, interview and prepare witnesses, manage caseloads, and keep the client administration informed. The ideal candidate will also independently conduct, lead, and participate in negotiations and mediations in state and federal forums.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred legal experience /education in the following areas:
* At least three years of practice in the fields of (a) employment and labor law, including
handling personnel/employment cases, (b) tort law, including handling high volume caseloads,
and (c) administrative law, including experience with legislation, rulemaking, and policymaking.
* Experience with IPRA, contract/grant administration, and legal research.
* Competency with Microsoft and Adobe Acrobat are beneficial.
Minimum Qualification
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law and four (4) years of experience in the practice of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license (Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA). Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), extensive computer and phone usage. Must be able to work under pressure, including with high volume, be responsive to multiple demands, and be able to perform tasks to meet stringent deadlines. Some sitting standing, bending and reaching may be required.
