Assistant Trails Coordinator
Full-time, Hourly
Hourly Range: $22.41- $25.03/hr

Job Summary
This position is responsible for assisting with the management of the trail system, both hard and soft surface, with multiple user types. This position is also in charge of performing maintenance work and providing field supervision in the day-to-day operation and overseeing the maintenance of trails, assisting with the Oak Leaf Trail sign program by locating signs, developing content, and installing, preserving and enhancing department assets, administering volunteer program, and ensuring quality service and product delivery.
Job Responsibilities
- Trail Inspections – Conduct periodic inspections of Milwaukee County’s Trails for vegetation clearance, adequate sight-lines, surface conditions, drainage, and signs. Understand and implement sustainable trail practices.
- Administration – Request Utility hotlines. Record and maintain work progress, survey results, and map information. Maintain email and phone correspondence as well as support internal and external partnerships.
- Education and Outreach – Conduct educational and informational presentations on trails for community input and outreach and perform volunteer recruitment.
- Training and Coordination – Train, coordinate, and oversee employees and volunteers on trail maintenance and construction in accordance with Parks’ Trails Network Plan and sustainable soft trail design standards along with administering volunteer program.
- Data Collection – Collect user data through trail counts and user surveys. Gather GPS and GIS information to develop maps using ArcGIS for public and internal use and update the trail maps.
- Trail Maintenance – Participate in trail maintenance and construction of soft trails. Maintain the Department’s equipment cache in good repair and implement the sign plan.
- Special Assignments and Projects – Participate in special project teams, community outreach efforts, and other duties as assigned.
- Operation of Vehicles, Equipment and Tools – Operate vehicles, chainsaw, motorized equipment, power and hand tools, PC’s, and other office equipment.
Required Education, License/Certification and Experiences
- Current residency within the State of Wisconsin upon application required
- Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License required and must be maintained throughout incumbency
- High School Diploma or GED required
- At least six (6) months or more of experience in Landscape, Trail Maintenance, or Volunteer Leading required
- At least six (6) months or more of work experience in a Lead, Supervisory or Management role required
- Wisconsin DATCP Category 6.0 (Right of Way & Natural Areas) Pesticide Applicator certification required or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire
- SAWW 1/First Aid/CPR required or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire
