Assistant Scientist

This position exists to conduct and coordinate research activities in the Ruminant Nutrition Lab located in Call Hall. This person will work with their supervisor and other faculty to make sure that research related lab activity is conducted on time, as scheduled. This person will ensure that lab equipment Is maintained. Performs record keeping responsibilities using knowledge of the instrument and visual appraisal to evaluate instrument performance.

25%Responsible for coordinating the use of space, equipment, and supplies to expedite and enhance research. Instructs and educates graduate students on lab procedures. Assists in instruction of laboratory classes.

25% Analyzes experimental data and interprets results to support research in biological or chemical processes. Sets up, adjusts, calibrates, cleans, and troubleshoots laboratory equipment, including spectrophotometer, plate reader, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, HPLC, and gas chromatography. Develops and evaluates current and new procedures for analysis of biological samples. Knowledge of chemistry and the analytical instruments is needed for performing these tasks.

25% Conducts standardized biological and biochemical laboratory analyses to determine quantity of chemical substances in food and other biological samples. Keeps detailed logs of all work-related.

10% Provides technical support to faculty and students in the collection, handling, and preparation of biological samples (such as blood, feces, animal feed, etc.) to ensure timely preparation and prevent sample degradation.

15% Monitors laboratory safety procedures to ensure compliance with standards or to make improvements as needed. Performs minor administrative duties. Purchases laboratory supplies and equipment, when supplies are low or near their expiration date. Generates invoices for work conducted in the lab. Identifies opportunities for revenue enhancement and cost containment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry or chemistry.
  • 2 years of experience in laboratory-based research activities
  • 1 year experience with sampling, testing, analyzing results and with the operation and maintenance of gas chromatograph (GC) research equipment
  • Demonstrated ability analyzing samples with HPLC, as well as troubleshooting, operation and maintenance of the HPLC equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability with colorimetric assays and the use of spectrophotometer and plate reader for conducting analyses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with the operation of atomic absorption spectrophotometer

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Computer knowledge and skills essential.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment including the ability to trouble shoot, perform minor repairs tasks is helpful.
  • The ability to communicate with scientifically trained people and be a team player is essential.
