Job Posting Summary
The Department of Communication and the Arts at Mercy University (NY) seeks applications for an Assistant Professor with a specialization in Art History to begin January or September 2024 (4-4 teaching load). Primary responsibilities include teaching a two-semester Art History sequence for students in our Design and Animation BFA program and general education courses for students from across the university. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with other faculty across the School of Liberal Arts to develop new courses in which art history is examined within social and cultural contexts such as race, gender, sexuality, and social justice.

The candidate should be comfortable teaching courses that address the major art movements and styles throughout history, as well as the work and traditions of historically marginalized artists in the classroom. Candidates specializing in design history movements such as Art Deco, Modernism and Post Modernism and contemporary design, as well as those with knowledge in design principles, are also encouraged to apply.

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in student-centered undergraduate teaching as well as scholarly achievement in their specialization of art/design history. Successful candidates will also be expected to engage in service at the department and school levels and possess a desire to contribute to the university’s General Education mission.

Qualifications
Ph.D. in Art or Design History by appointment date is required. Additional coursework in cultural studies is desirable. A complete application will include a cover letter; curriculum vitae; a statement of teaching philosophy that addresses the applicant’s commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds; the names and contact information for at least three professional references; and copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable for the purpose of application). Finalists will be required to submit three current letters of reference. Applicants are encouraged to apply via the Mercy University website by November 15, 2023 for full consideration.

Compensation offered will be commensurate with the educational background and work experience of the individual.

The Mercy University Retirement Plan is comprised of two components:
Deferred Compensation Plan
All eligible employees may contribute to the Deferred Compensation Plan on a pre-tax basis upon joining the University.
Defined Contribution Plan
Eligible employees are enrolled in the Defined Contribution Plan after two (2) years of full-time employment at Mercy University and receive a semi-monthly contribution from the College, based on age and salary. If an employee is under age 36, they will receive a contribution of 3.3% of their annual salary each pay period. If an employee is age 36 or older, they will receive a contribution of 9% of their annual salary each pay period.
If employed full-time for two (2) or more consecutive years by another institution(s) of higher education (college or university), without an intervening break in service within the last twelve (12) months prior to employment before joining Mercy, please submit a waiting period waiver form to Office of Human Resources.
