Summary
The City of Wasilla is currently recruiting for the position of an Assistant Ice-Skating Instructor with the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center. This is a non-exempt, on-call/non-regular position without benefits. The hours will range from 2-6 hours per week with class days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Each class varies from 1-2 hours and the season will span from August to February. Multiple openings available.
As an Assistant Ice-Skating Instructor, you will be responsible for instructing ice-skating classes held at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center. You will be expected to assist in preparation for classes, be friendly, personable, knowledgeable, and effective with the general public, and instruct/demonstrate ice skating skills to a variety of age groups. The Assistant Ice-Skating Instructor is expected to perform the necessary duties associated with the operation of the Learn to Skate program. Most tasks are of a public service nature and performed to ISI or other City of Wasilla adopted standards, guidelines, and programs.
Job Duties
The responsibilities listed below are illustrative of the various types of duties that may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Instruct skating lessons and other ice arena programs in accordance with the Ice-Skating Institute or other City of Wasilla adopted standards.
- Communicate with other skating instructors and facility staff the need for additional assistance and/or equipment required for ice skating programs and safe operation of the ice arena.
- Educate ice arena patrons and inform them of the purpose and need for safety and demonstrate the ability to convey ice arena rules and regulations.
- Observe and enforce all rules and regulations of the facility.
- Assist in preparation and cleanup of ice arena for skating classes.
- Complete all required ice-skating lessons, records, and reports for submittal to the Ice-Skating Program Facilitator.
- Report all issues, concerns, and programming needs to Ice Skating Program Facilitator.
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of ice-skating programs and the potential hazards and safety measures associated with such programs.
- Ability to teach ice skating skills and other aspects of ice-skating programs.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing and effectively work with patrons of all ages, parents, public, volunteers, and staff.
- Ability to work personably and effectively with the general public.
- Assist with registration process and record keeping.
- Ability to abide by ISI (Ice Skating Institute) Code of Ethics.
- Ability to assist with decorating arena for ice shows and preparing written programs.
- Ability to work proficiently with other skate assistants, volunteers, and skate facilitator and supervisor.
- Ability to properly execute skills being taught to students.
- Knowledge of hockey skating skills and ability to instruct is recommended.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience and/or Education:
- An equivalent combination of education, experience and training that would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the successful performance of the essential job duties.
- Must be at least 14 years of age (with a valid and approved State of Alaska Work Permit); or 18 years of age or older and eligible for employment in the United States.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Must possess an ISI Membership, or obtain within 30 days of hire and remain current on ISI skating requirements.
This is a non Benefitted position through the City of Wasilla. Please see the information below for the mandatory deduction requirements under this position.
- The City of Wasilla has opted out of Social Security and instead contributes to the State of Alaska Supplemental Benefits System annuity plan (SBS). SBS is provided in lieu of Federal Social Security (deductions for Medicare will still be required). Participation in this program is mandatory. The current employee contribution is 6.13% of gross wages.
