Job Description Summary:
Communications and Marketing develops and implements strategy and tactics for showcasing and raising the visibility of the university’s experts, initiatives, and accomplishments. It manages media inquiries and interviews with senior university leadership and produces print and online publications to showcase the university.
The Athletics Communications unit functions within Communications & Marketing to promote GW Athletics’ 20 intercollegiate and varsity sports teams and more than 400 student-athletes. As members of the Office of the Communications & Marketing, we work together with university communications colleagues and other university stakeholders and constituents to position the Department of Athletics and its mission to mirror the overall mission of the university.
The Assistant Director of Athletics Communications is the primary contact for several of GW’s 20 sports. By working with student-athletes, coaches, and administration, the Assistant Director proactively seeks to enhance the profile and position of GW Athletics via expert storytelling, content creation, and established relationships with regional and national media.
The Assistant Director is also the Athletics Communications point person for other department functions in the absence of the Director, as the position calls for leadership qualities and established decision-making ability. This position will report to the Associate Athletics Director for Communications.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement communications plans and strategies to elevate the visibility of one of GW’s most high-profile sports and other sports for which they are the official contact, including identifying and pitching story ideas to media, pitching and staffing media interviews, facilitating press conferences, preparing coaches and student-athletes for media interviews, identifying and implementing online and social media strategies and coordinating with Sports Marketing to further overall athletics and university strategic goals.
- Work independently and exercise independent judgment in representing GW as the Athletics Communications lead at games and events for which they have been designated the official contact and other sports as needed.
- Oversee statistical information for assigned beats, including compiling and maintaining records on each sport, distributing statistics and information, and maintaining and updating information files on student-athletes and staff.
- Prepare post-game recaps and report results of all games and events to media, Atlantic 10 Conference, and/or NCAA Offices.
- Prepare, and manage clearance processes for and distribute Athletics Communications media advisories, press releases, game previews, game recaps, and other media relations materials for sports for which they are the official contact.
- Prepare game programs for all home events for sports for which they are the official contact. Promote individual athletes for All-conference, All-America, and other honors as appropriate. Oversee the Athletics Communications Office as needed.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in intercollegiate athletics communications, including men’s or women’s basketball
- Existing relationships with national and regional sports media
- Proven experience in developing and implementing media relations strategic plans and securing media coverage
- Experience managing media relations, including serving as a spokesperson and managing media logistics
- Experience coordinating communications and public relations with sports marketing efforts
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Social media expertise

Typical Hiring Range
