The Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations at Hofstra University’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication seeks qualifies candidates for the tenure-track, full-time position of assistant or associate professor to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in public relations beginning fall 2024. The anticipated position is open rank, depending on qualifications.

We seek candidates who are resourceful, responsive, teacher-practitioners, including non-traditional candidates, who are knowledgeable about best practices and current tools for public relations and strategic communication, and whose background includes professional experience in public relations. The candidate should be capable of teaching public relations fundamentals, writing, research methods and analytics, media relations, digital communication, integrated communication, and campaigns. Additional courses may include courses found within major concentrations offered in entertainment and sports, as well as graduate courses in international public relations, business communication, and reputation and crisis management.

The successful candidate will have earned a master’s or doctorate degree and have prior teaching experience or be prepared to demonstrate teaching ability. The candidate will have a body of academic work including a record of scholarship and a research agenda, and/or have professional credentials. Candidates should also have an understanding of the ethical, economic, and technological challenges facing the changing media landscape and demonstrate innovative approaches to addressing them in an undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Candidates must be committed to reflecting diversity and inclusion in their syllabi and working with a diverse student population, faculty, and staff.

Tenure-track appointees are expected to establish a successful record of academic scholarship and/or industry-related professional output as well as participate in service and committee work for the Department, the School, and the University.
Qualifications

  • Terminal degree or doctorate in communication, public relations or a related area of study
  • Professional experience in public relations
  • College-level teaching experience
  • Excellent digital communication and writing skills
  • Successful candidates will have demonstrated a commitment to promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in an educational environment.
