Description
Cary’s Cultural Arts Education Program is seeking a talented fine artist with a passion for painting and drawing and a knack for developing others’ artistic abilities. Join our team as a Drawing & Painting Instructor to support youth, teen, and adult artists at intermediate and advanced levels. This position will teach drawing and painting in one of more of the following: oils, acrylics, and/or watercolors to successfully build student abilities.

Must be able to teach weeknights and some weekends. The number of hours varies throughout the year. Must be willing to teach at the Cary Arts Center, pop-up locations, The Hive in western Cary, other town community centers, and the Downtown Cary Park.

This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.
Typical Tasks

  • Communicates with supervisor to propose and evaluate classes and camps;
  • Develops age- and skill-level appropriate curriculum for educational drawing and painting classes;
  • Teaches drawing skills and concepts to teens and adults at intermediate and advanced levels;
  • Teaches painting skills and concepts to teens and adults at intermediate and advanced levels;
  • Works with the supply coordinator to make supply requests for classes;
  • Gathers and prepares materials for classes;
  • Sets up and takes down classroom equipment and supplies as necessary for teaching;
  • Engages all participants in lessons;
  • Works in different environmental conditions indoors and potentially outdoors;
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of art history; knowledge of art principles; skilled in drawing and painting in one or more of the following: oils, acrylics, and/or watercolors; skilled in writing course descriptions; skilled in interpersonal communication; skilled in critical thinking; ability to problem-solve; ability to demonstrate art techniques and process; ability and willingness to teach En Plein Air a plus; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and ability to acquire knowledge of policies, procedures and services of the facility, division and department.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience
Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must have a four-year degree or equivalent experience in a visual art-related field.

One year of teaching experience preferred.

Conditions of Employment
