SUMMARY OF POSITION
The work of the Animal Shelter Kennel Tech involves handling and caring for animals brought to the shelter. In accordance with established policies and procedures, employees in this classification clean and routinely maintain the kennel areas, feed, and care for the animals, maintain records, and assist visitors of the shelter.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Additional job functions may vary due to department or City needs/requirements. Assignments may include but are not limited to:
- Following established procedures, clean and routinely maintain Animal Shelter including animal cages and kennels.
- Rinses, scrubs, and disinfects the animal kennels and cages, outdoor runs, hallways, floors, walls, restrooms and isolation/quarantine areas.
- Cleans water and food dishes and related kennel equipment and facilities.
- Washes and disinfects animal bedding and cots.
- Prepares food, feeds and waters animals, refills food bins as needed.
- Identifies sick and diseased animals and takes precautions to prevent the spread of disease to other animals or humans. Notifies intake staff of any recommended veterinarian care as needed.
- Greets customers, directs persons to appropriate personnel, provides information and provides assistance to customers on shelter adoptions and/or policies.
- Performs accurate data entry to shelter software.
- Move animals among various areas within shelter facilities as required in a safe effective and humane manner.
- Educate prospective adopters on specific animals, traits, and requirements of animals placed for adoption.
- Operate shelter vehicles to deliver/transport/transfer animals or complete other errands as required.
- Maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours.
- Will be required to work weekends and holidays.
- Perform other animal shelter related duties as assigned.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Perform customer service duties, including answering questions from the public/customers.
- Administer medication to sick, injured or recovering animals as directed by a veterinarian.
- Assist a veterinarian with sterilization and euthanasia of animals as needed.
- Perform other animal shelter related duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Certain licenses and certificates, if required, may be acquired on the job as agreed upon by the City and employee. Subject to change based on operational needs.
- Valid Washington State Driver License.
- Must be 18 years of age
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Work is performed in a moderately noisy indoor environment as well as outdoors, often in inclement weather. Lift and handle objects and animals weighing up to sixty (60) pounds; ability to restrain and handle animals up to 150 pounds. Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend, reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects, and operate computers, copy machines, and other office equipment. The work is performed in an animal shelter/office environment under pressure and requiring the ability to quickly adjust to changing priorities and demands. Exposure to disinfectant solutions, animal dander, and zoonotic diseases. Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling or working around unruly aggressive and unpredictable animals. Handle unruly, aggressive, and otherwise dangerous animals safely and humanely.
