Position Purpose
The Animal Keeper II performs skilled and daily animal care and keeping duties for the department. Ensures the safe and humane care of all animals and people at the Dallas Animal Shelter

This position will support our Foster Team, which primarily focuses on helping to place animals in foster and supporting our foster volunteers, providing positive customer service, liaising with medical, and processing adoptions. This position will also be responsible for helping to maintain the cleanliness of kennels, hosting adoption events, and responding to general inquiries via phone and email. The ideal candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment and possess strong interpersonal skills. This position would require the candidate to be comfortable handling and caring for animals of all sizes, breeds, species, and energy levels. Candidate must be able to work collaboratively with other staff members and volunteers.
Essential Functions
1 Feeds, waters, exercises and grooms animals to ensure good health and appearance of animals.
2 Cleans and repairs kennels, stalls, or cages of animals to ensure proper sanitary and safety conditions.

3 Monitors and observes animals in cages or stalls to detect illnesses and injuries and ensure proper care is provided.

4 Assists animal control officers with unloading animals to place animals in kennel or in loading euthanized animals to transport to landfill

5 Assists senior animal control officers in euthanasia laboratory, or city veterinarians while examining animals.

6 Delivers animals to veterinary clinic for sterilization, evaluation, or minor treatment; transports animals to various locations for adoptions and other events.

7 Completes paperwork and handles telephone calls pertaining to public inquiries on adoption of animals or for locating animals that have been picked up by animal control officers.

8 Collects fees and writes receipts for registration and adoption of animals in shelter.

9 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE:

  • Six (6) months paid animal feeding/care experience which must have included public contact

OR

  • Six (6) months volunteer experience in an animal shelter/veterinarian clinic as an animal keeper or animal care attendant performing direct animal care

AND

  • Six (6) months of customer service experience

LICENSE(S) and/or CERTIFICATION(S):

  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record

OTHER REQUIREMENT(S):

  • No Felony Drug offenses within the last 10 years
  • No Animal Cruelty convictions
  • Subject to extensive walking and bending
  • Subject to inclement weather conditions
  • Availability to work various shifts including nights, weekends & holidays
  • Must pass physical exam including drug/alcohol testing

PREFERENCE(S):

  • English/Spanish bilingual skills are a plus
  • Experience in an animal shelter/veterinarian clinic is a plus

Dallas Animal Services (Guest Services): The selected candidates will work directly within shelter operations of Dallas Animal Services (DAS) to provide a high level of personalized customer service to adopters and visitors; helping to facilitate adoptions, providing information about pets in our care, and general services provided by Dallas Animal Services. This position will also be responsible for helping to maintain the cleanliness of kennels, hosting off-site adoption events, and responding to general inquiries via phone and email.

Dallas Animal Services (Foster Department): The selected candidates will work as a member of the Foster Team to recruit, onboard, support, and retain foster volunteers.

Supplemental Information
The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.

For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position.

Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.

Working Conditions & Hazards:
