The Position
This recruitment is open only to Mendocino County employees with at least six (6) months of regular, full-time continuous employment or equivalent permanent part-time service.
Under general supervision, provides routine paramedical treatment to animals. Cares for animals and assists veterinarian to perform medical procedures; monitors post-surgery animals; maintains and sanitizes equipment and surgical area; completes necessary paperwork.

Job Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents:
- Coordinates and schedules surgery appointments in the clinic and mobile van; oversees the completion of required surgery and/or release forms and provides information and instruction to animal owners; talks with animal owners, staff, and volunteers concerning health issues of shelter animals.
- Prepares animals for surgery, clips, scrubs, assists with sedative injections, places breathing tubes and connects anesthesia machine; monitors post-surgery animals to prevent and/or treat surgical complications; cleans and sterilizes surgical equipment and surgical area, including cages, floors and counter tops; operates and maintains an autoclave for sterilizing surgical packs.
- Administers vaccines, antibiotics and other medications as directed by a county veterinarian. Performs health related duties as assigned, may include bathing, cleaning ears, and trimming nails; conduct euthanasia of animals by direct injection when necessary.
- Tracks progress of clients/patients and provides for follows up treatment if necessary.
- Processes paperwork associated with surgical procedures; inputs animal and owner information into computer database and prints certificates and receipts when appropriate; assists with monthly billing; orders supplies.
- May serve as backup for other assignments.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED. One year of experience performing paramedical tasks in a veterinarian office or animal shelter is preferred: or,
Any combination of related education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities, to perform the essential functions of the job.
Must successfully pass criminal history and other background checks.
Licenses and Certifications:
A valid California class C driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Proper animal restraint techniques.
- Assisting in medical surgical procedures.
- Sterile techniques and consequences of contaminations in a surgical environment.
- General animal health care.
- Basic record keeping.
- Computer applications and hardware related to performance essential to the job including: database, spreadsheet, and Word.

- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, employees, clients and the public.
- Learn to recognize symptoms of rabies and other common diseases of animals.
- Understand program objectives in relation to departmental goals and procedures.
- While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or to feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl, and to speak and to hear.
- While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to use color, sound, odor perception and discrimination.
- While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

SALARY
Compensation is based on a five-step salary range, with annual merit-based increases within the salary range.
RETIREMENT

HOLIDAYS AND PERSONAL LEAVE
Mendocino County observes 11 paid holidays per year. Employees are granted 24 – 48 hours of personal leave annually, depending upon Bargaining Unit.
VACATION
Accrues at the rate of two weeks per year for three years. Three weeks per year after three years, four weeks after eight years and five weeks after 15 years.
SICK LEAVE
Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of 1.25 days per month, or 15 days per year. Accruals are pro-rated for part-time employees working at least 20 hours per week. Part-time employees working less than 20 hours per week, and extra-help employees receive up to 24 hours (or 3 days) of paid sick leave annually.

The County and the employee share the cost of an employee selected health care plan; enrollment in the plan includes $20,000 Life Insurance.
