Department Summary

The Department of Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Computer Science. Instruction is provided by 16 tenure track faculty, 2 emeritus faculty, and 6 career instructor faculty. The department serves approximately 600 undergraduate and 90 graduate majors, as well as offering a number of general education classes in the discipline. The primary research foci of the tenure track faculty are high-performance computing, data science, networking, and distributed systems with cross-cutting concerns of security and privacy.
Position Summary

The Analyst Programmer 2 will install and maintain computer systems and networks for the Department of Computer Science, specifically Unix services including NIS, LDAP, Kerberos, Domain Name Service, World Wide Web, fileservers, backup servers, and databases. The position will also maintain security and firewall software, perform forensic analysis and reports of abuse, and collaborate in design and implementation of new versions or systems.

It will be essential for this position to build and maintain current knowledge of Internet RFCs, and evaluate new network software and protocols such as multicast IP, integrated services internet, http, mime, etc. This position will have the opportunity to evaluate products and services for purchase and implementation, and to negotiate and maintain software and hardware contracts with vendors.

This position reports directly to the Department Head, and will provide direct support to the Department’s faculty, students, and staff by answering questions, solving problems, and providing technical and budgetary consultation. This position may also include supporting client labs or groups.
Minimum Requirements
• This classification requires a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in systems analysis and related programming support functions generally obtained by a bachelor’s degree in computer science, or an equivalent amount of training and applied experience.

• Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to debug and/or troubleshoot application and program problems.
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
• Professional competency with network and system administration.
• Ability to think objectively and creatively, focusing not only on details, but accurately comprehending the larger issues and being able to communicate the relation accurately and clearly between both.
• Proven skills in technical writing, verbal communications, consulting, documentation, and problem-solving in a rapidly changing technical environment.
• Fluency in scripting and programming languages such as: python, perl, php, C, bash shell programming, javascript (including AJAX), html with css.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science
• Two years of experience with software development, web programming, and network protocols.
• Experience with databases including developing relational schemas and writing SQL queries.
• Experience with unix and unix subsystems, such as Mac OS-X, omnios, ubuntu linux.
• Experience with services such as: ldap, dns, dhcp, radius, smtp, imap, http, smb, nfs.
