Description
Do you enjoy action sports such as skateboarding, inline skating, BMX biking, scooter-riding and parkour? Do you like to show off your skills and teach others? If you answered “Yes” to both questions, come join our team!

The Action Sports Instructor I will assist with beginner-level instruction in camps, lessons, tournaments, and special events. This position will also assist with basic course maintenance and facility upkeep.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Operations and Program Supervisor – Action Sports.

This is a seasonal (June-October), non-benefited position, up to 40 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours. Scheduled work hours are variable and can include some evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Typical Tasks

  • Instructs in a variety of action sports, including skateboarding, inline skating, BMX biking, scooter-riding and parkour;
  • Assists with exhibitions and clinics during events;
  • Assists in creating program schedules including instruction materials, activities, and games;
  • Completes short reports regarding the lessons;
  • Ensures participant safety;
  • Assists in the marketing and promotion of programs at the facility;
  • Assists participants in registering for programs at the facility;
  • Assists with dissemination and collection of class evaluation forms;
  • Assists with course maintenance items, including light ramp maintenance, course cleaning, and preparation;
  • Attends regularly scheduled meetings;
  • Presents a positive role model for all park participants;
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge in the basic skills, rules and strategies of at least one of the action sports listed above; Ability to gain expertise in additional action sports categories; Some experience in teaching action sports preferred; Possess strong verbal and written communication skills with children, youth, and adults; Ability to interact with the public effectively, dealing with challenging situations in a firm, yet tactful manner; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Ability to acquire knowledge of the policies, procedures, and services of Cary Action Sports and the Town of Cary, and communicate those to participants; Ability to promote the programs available at Cary Action Sports and present a positive example of the Cary philosophy of community service.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Must be at least 15 years old. Minors must be enrolled in school.

Prefers experience working with children and/or youth in a group setting.

Prefers candidates with knowledge and/or experience in one of the Action Sports offered at this facility.

Prefers CPR/First Aid Certification. If not yet CPR/First Aid certified, requires ability to successfully complete CPR/First-Aid training upon hire.

Physical Requirements
Ability to work outside on courses for extended time periods in a variety of weather conditions, such as extreme temperatures and summer showers.
Must be able to lift and carry moderately heavy items such as water coolers, trash bins, etc.
Physical ability to access all points in the park, including on decks of all ramps.
