Classification Summary
The Nutrition Assistant assists the Social Services Programmer and Food Service Worker by providing basic kitchen preparation and supporting the meal delivery program. This is a non-technical position and provides basic assistance in preparing, packaging, heating, serving, and delivering readymade meals. This position prepares work areas for volunteers and sets up the serving area and dining room for community center clients. The position may assist the Social Services Programmer with paperwork and other duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics
The Nutrition Assistant performs food preparation duties for hot food lines and for transport to homes and remote sites. The Nutrition Assistant supports the meal delivery program in all aspects as needed. Advancement to Food Service Worker would be based on need and with a demonstrated ability to coordinate aspects of the nutrition program such as Meals-On-Wheels.

The incumbent may perform a combination of some or all the following duties:
    • Serves institutional quantities of meals in an efficient manner, sequencing items to optimize presentation and quality.
    • Sets up serving areas for patron access.
    • Maintains equipment, storage, food preparation and serving areas in a safe and sanitary manner.
    • Prepares and organizes and serving areas.
    • Participates with inventory, checks food service deliveries and supplies, inspects food items and/or supplies (e.g. proper labeling, temperatures, appropriate storage, etc.) for the purpose of verifying quantity, quality and specifications of orders and/or complying with mandated health standards.
    • Monitors kitchen and dining areas for the purpose of ensuring a safe and sanitary working environment.
    • Ensures appropriate quantities and quality of food items are available on the serving line.
    • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

This position requires the ability to carry out, but is not limited to, the following functions:

  • Must be able to perform all essential duties of the position under only general guidance.
  • Must be able to understand and follow policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing food service and nutrition.
  • Must be able to perform duties with focus on safety and sanitation.
  • Must be skilled in operation of commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Must be able to read and understand written directions and recipes and to calculate weights and measurements.
  • Must have math skills to sufficient to compute sums, fractions, and portions.
  • Must be able to learn, understand, and apply safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively with internal and external customers and coworkers.
  • Requires sufficient human relations skills to convey work instructions to others and to serve customers in a courteous manner.
  • Requires the ability to work as a member of a team and convey a positive image of the City.

Education, Training, and Experience
This position requires a High School diploma or equivalent, three years’ experience in quantity food preparation, cooking, baking, or in an institutional quantity setting.

  • Must have or obtain Food handler’s card within first week of employment

Employees have an option between a service plan (base plan plus major medical coverage) or a heath maintenance organization (HMO plan). Each medical plan includes prescription drugs and vision care. Coverage is for the employee and their dependents with a pick-up by employees towads the premium dependent upon their bargaining unit or management agreement.

Employees and their dependents have two plans available for dental insurance either through a service plan or HMO plan. Both plans for preventive, routine and major dental care, and orthodontic benefits.

Life Insurance: Full-time AFSCME employees are provided $25,000 life insurance with $1,000 for dependent coverage.

Long Term Disability Insurance: Full-time employees have long term disability insurance that provides for 2/3 of an employee’s salary, up to a maximum earnings salary of $4,000 per month after a 90-day waiting period.

Retirement: The City is a member of the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). The City currently contributes both the employer and employee’s portion with the amount dependent upon the employee’s status with PERS.

HRA-VEBA: This is a Voluntary Employee Benefits Account. It is an account established for employees to use for out-of-pocket medical expenses pre and post retirement. The amount contributed to the VEBA is currently $50.00 month.

Flexible 125-Spending Account: Employees are offered a flexible 125-spending account that allows employees to pre-tax their portion of medical premiums or they can contribute pre-tax dollars for out-of-pocket medical expenses or child care expenses.

Employee Assistance Program: The City provides employees and their families up to 5 free confidential counseling sessions and 5 free legal consultations per incident through EASE.

Holidays: The City recognizes 10 paid holidays during a calendar year with 2 additional days given as floating holidays. Part-time employees are paid for the number of hours they are scheduled to work on holidays. Please check the city calendar for holiday closure dates.

Vacation: Paid vacation time accrues on a monthly basis based upon hours worked, length of service, and by employee group. AFSCME employees can accrue up to 240 hours of vacation, part-time union employees can accrue up to 120 hours of vacation. Part-time employees accrue vacation based on number of hours hired to work.

Sick Leave: Sick leave accrues on a monthly basis at a rate of ten hours per month. Part-time employees accrue sick leave based on number of hours hired to work.

Gym Membership: Full-time employees who join a gym will have $15 per month contributed to their membership.

Payroll and Direct Deposit: Employees have the option of having their paycheck direct deposited into their checking or saving account at the bank or credit union of their choice. Payday is monthly on the last working day of any given month (by general employees).
