Join Pima County’s Department of Transportation as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) professional in the Mobility, Innovation, and Technology Division. These two (2) positions will play a key role in implementing and managing GIS technology to support the department’s efforts in optimizing the transportation system through its Transportation System Management (TSMO) and operations initiatives. Duties/Responsibilities

(Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.)

Designs or prepares cartographic representations of GIS data using GIS applications, including web-based mapping systems;

Maintains or modifies existing GIS data;

Enters data into GIS databases, using techniques such as coordinate geometry, keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning or automatic conversion to features, or converting other sources of digital data;

Reviews existing or incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness of documentation;

Interprets aerial or ortho imagery for mapping purposes;

Revises existing maps and reports, making all necessary corrections and adjustments;

Compiles GIS data required for map preparation, including aerial imagery, survey notes, records, reports, and original maps;

Documents GIS procedures, metadata, and operating standards;

Provides technical support to users or customers regarding the maintenance, development, or operation of GIS databases, applications and data collection devices;

Identifies and compiles GIS data to create maps in response to requests.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Knowledge of:

  • GIS data entry techniques and methodologies;
  • quality Control/Quality Assurance of GIS data and products;
  • GIS data research, collection, organization and documentation for specific product output;
  • current GIS software and procedures;
  • GIS metadata compilation.

Skill in:

  • creating and editing GIS data, including attribute data, using methodologies such as coordinate geometry, heads-up digitizing, and conversion of other data sources;
  • interpreting legal descriptions/legal documents and generating GIS features from them;
  • adjusting GIS layers to, and extracting features from, aerial or ortho imagery;
  • creating and maintaining GIS metadata;
  • presenting and training others;
  • providing customer support in the use of GIS data and applications;
  • working as part of a team by delivering to deadlines and communicating effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

(1) An Associate’s degree from an accredited college, university or technical school in Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, cartography, geography or related field as determined by the appointing authority at the time of recruitment.

OR:

(2) Two years of technical experience in geographic information systems, which included data creation and analysis, the production of maps, reports and cartographic products.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  1. Minimum of one (1) year experience using GIS software, such as Esri’s ArcGIS Pro or other relevant GIS applications.
  2. Minimum of one (1) year experience with customer support, including answering questions in a courteous and timely manner and providing training on available tools.
  3. Experience editing and maintaining GIS vector layers, such as rights-of-way, easements, annexations, etc., and associated attribute tables.
  4. Experience creating map products and/or exhibits.
  5. Experience interpreting legal descriptions and legal documents (e.g. subdivision plats, deeds) and generating GIS features from them.

Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZdriver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.
