Every four years, Iowa is flooded with presidential candidates seeking to win the first-in-the-nation Iowa Caucuses. The Register seeks a photo intern to pitch in on that coverage and a broad spectrum of other assignments. You would frequently be assigned to cover candidates on the campaign trail, shooting photo and video. Or you could be asked to pick up other photo assignments while colleagues are out covering candidates, including a mix of breaking news, high school sports action, features, portraits, photo galleries, video and self-generated visual storytelling.

This internship will run from late October through Jan. 21, just after the Iowa Caucuses.

Candidates must demonstrate strong photo, video and writing skills, able to quickly write accurate, informative captions, copy blocks and short stories.

Register photographers are expected to promote their photos and video on social media, understand digital metrics and work to build audience for their work. Flexibility, resourcefulness and strong collaboration skills are musts.

The Register is a 17-time Pulitzer Prize winner and recognized nationally for the quality of its political reporting.

Responsibilities:

  • Create quality multimedia storytelling using photography, videography and text that informs, entertains and engages our audience
  • Use audience metrics to assist in making coverage decisions
  • Promote your own work and the work of your colleagues

Requirements:

  • Must have substantial professional experience as a visual journalist, through internships, freelance or full-time jobs
  • Exceptional core photojournalism skills (reporting, photography and videography)
  • Ability to use basic and advanced computer programs, including but not limited to video editing software, Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro and Photo Mechanic
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Understands social media and how to respond to and engage a fan base on digital platforms
  • Able to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment
  • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law
