The Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts is a world-class, multi-venue performing arts center on the campus of the University of Denver. Home to the Lamont School of Music, The Newman Center hosts nearly 500 events annually. In addition to performances by Lamont students and faculty, the Newman Center is an in-demand performance venue for numerous rental clients including the Denver Post Pen and Podium Series, Friends of Chamber Music, Denver Brass, Wonderbound Dance, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Urban League of Denver, The CELL and many others. The Newman Center also presents nationally touring performing arts groups through its acclaimed series, Newman Center Presents.
Position Summary
The Event Manager reports to the Assistant Director of Events and is responsible for successfully managing University and commercial events through the planning and implementation of production requirements, execution of required contractual obligations, and settlement of events. The position assists in the management of daily operations, provides tours of the facility, and acts as a liaison for events and performances with respect to clients, parking, ushering, stage operations, concessions, catering, custodial and ticketing. This position requires the ability to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends on a regular basis.
Essential Functions
- Manage client relations from the point of initial contact through the execution of an event. Booking dates in venues and reception rooms. Continuous and effective communication with clients before, during and after events.
- Coordinate and manage University and external commercial events, as assigned, through the planning and implementation of production requirements needed, developing and designing detailed plans and diagrams for event needs, and execute required contractual obligations.
- Supervise/oversee University and external contracted event personnel in performing tasks necessary for the coordination, execution and settlement of University and commercial events.
- Work directly with the Administrative Assistant regarding liquor inventory. Ensure sufficient product is available for events and client is charged appropriately on their invoice. Enforce all applicable laws, polices, and procedures related to events at the Newman Center.
- Supervise part time Managers on Duty: manage hiring process, scheduling shifts, training on event operations procedures (including but not limited to parking and food & beverage procedures and cash bank management)
- Supervise student admin (if applicable)
- Serve as cash custodian for Newman Center food & beverage cash banks.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal skills in the English language are necessary. The employee must speak concisely and with a high level of clarity and persuasiveness. She or he must be able to compose professional correspondence. The individual must also possess excellent interpersonal skills, including competency in phone and e-mail etiquette. Employee must be approachable, maintain credibility and trust, listen attentively, and handle difficult situations dependably and tactfully.
- Working knowledge of Excel, including the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
- Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to prioritize high volumes of work, make independent decisions on behalf of the University, and ability to work on multiple tasks without direct supervision, while maintaining attention to detail. The individual must be able to handle changes to plans and monitor progress of tasks.
- Excellent customer service skills are essential for successful job performance. Ability to learn and interact frequently with event related computer software for the coordination, execution and settlements of events. Individual must have excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task and have a passion to learn and improve. The employee must be able to work an irregular schedule, including nights and weekends.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma
- 3-5 years of experience supporting events or programs to include experience processing contracts, payments, and travel arrangements; advanced education could be substituted for experience.
- 2-3 years of experience managing internal and external (contracted) event staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year university or college in a performing arts discipline, arts administration/management or music business
- One year of related experience in performing arts management

Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with some weekends and evenings required. Flex scheduling can be discussed with supervisor.

The salary grade for the position is 8.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $52,000 – $57,000.
