The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Social Media in the Office of Public Affairs (OPA), the Associate Director of Communications works collaboratively across OPA and with our campus partners. The Associate Director must be a discerning critical thinker and self-starter who has the ability to collaborate with people in every role across the University. Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills are key, especially as it relates to digital and social media content.
Responsibilities
- Create and promote content for social media and news platforms that promotes Columbia’s new president and its academic initiatives, research breakthroughs, faculty expertise, campus activities, and special events and announcements.
- Work in collaboration with public affairs and communications colleagues from across the University to help the Executive Director of Social Media and the Associate Vice President of Public Affairs to proactively develop long- and short-term strategic social media plans with the goal of achieving measurable media results.
- Organize and produce supporting materials such as social media tool kits.
- Attend selected University events to help promote and highlight the event on social media and on Columbia’s news platforms. (Occasionally, these events take place in the evenings and on weekends.)
- Help the Public Affairs Video Team to brainstorm and create original content for social media.
- Report and write/produce digital- and social media-friendly content for the University’s news channels.
- Collaborate on outreach to targeted audiences via social media, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of 4 years of progressive public affairs, social media, marketing, and communications or journalism experience.
- Strong social media skills.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Must be a digital super user with a deep, hands-on understanding of web/multimedia storytelling and production.
- Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, collaborative, and communications skills.
- Must have a sense of calm under pressure, the ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple projects and issues while meeting deadlines
Other Requirements
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, G Suite, Slack, Sprout, Canva, and Photoshop.
- Experience with SalesForce, Muck Rack, and QuickBase is a plus.
