Description / Position Overview
SEASONAL – Maintenance Support
In this position, you will assist with the mechanical operations of the department’s outdoor water features, including the Julie Penrose and Uncle Wilber fountains, Deerfield Hills Community Center and John Venezia Community Park spray parks, and three outdoor swimming pools.
The Julie Penrose Fountain, located in America the Beautiful Park, is one of Colorado Springs’ main attractions for families and tourists. Water flows inside the rotating sculpture and into wading pools. The Uncle Wilber Fountain (a water-spurting, tuba-playing fountain) in Acacia Park attracts children who love to play in the water and those who like to observe the action.

This is a seasonal (at-will) position with benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, which include Worker’s Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA (Public Employees’ Retirement Association).
Anticipated dates of employment are from May through September. Normal hours worked will be 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday through Thursday (most weekends and holidays will be required throughout the summer). Total hours worked not to exceed 1,500 annually.
Essential Job Functions – the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
- Assist staff with facilities operations and daily maintenance and repairs for the water features listed above
- Perform support duties, including monitoring fountains, pools, and spray parks
- Ensure the daily safety of visitors to the water features by monitoring chemical balance and mechanical function as well as responding to mechanical emergency situations
- Check and clean filters daily to ensure efficient operation of pump equipment
- Complete required daily paperwork and safety check list
- Perform daily opening and/or closing procedures
- Inspect fountains, pools, and spray parks for damage and vandalism; report to appropriate staff
- Attend required in-service trainings
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Knowledge of water feature maintenance and operations
- Knowledge of swimming pool water chemistry
- Ability to provide excellent customer service
- Ability to use hand tools, and basic electric tools
Successful candidates will have
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
Ideal candidates will also have
- Experience working with swimming pools, spray parks, and/or outdoor water features
Additional Information
The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to stand, climb, stoop, bend, work outdoors in extreme temperatures, work in vaults up to 20 feet below ground level (by accessing manhole covers and ladders), and lift 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally.
Regular attendance is essential to the performance of this position.
