Strategy and Technology – Wildlife Intern

At Weyerhaeuser, our focus is as much on building our people as building our business. We are committed to creating an environment where individuals can flourish, diversities encouraged, and communities supported. We are one of the premier integrated forest organizations in the world. At Weyerhaeuser, we are always looking for people who can contribute, grow, think, and create! Our associates are the real reason we have been in business for over 120 years. Their skill and ingenuity have made Weyerhaeuser one of the largest timberland companies and manufacturers and distributors of wood products in the world.

Weyerhaeuser has a summer internship available with the Terrestrial Resources group. Terrestrial Resources are a team of three operational support wildlife biologists and two ecological research scientists. The main task (70%) for the wildlife intern will be assessing the spatial distribution and longevity of structures created during harvesting to hold logs in place. Snags, downed logs, and stumps provided habitat for numerous organisms and are critical components of forest biological diversity. If these structures are created in sufficient quantity and persist over many years, they may provide supplemental cavity nesting opportunities. The intern will have two primary tasks: 1) refining field methods to measure spatial distribution and physical characteristics of structures 2) developing a geodatabase for documentation purposes. Additional duties (30%) include providing general support for Threatened and Endangered species surveys, map making in ArcGIS, and other activities to support Weyerhaeuser’s wildlife program and gain exposure to other facets of the Timberlands business. This internship will last approximately three and a half months (630 hours) with an expected average of 40 hours/week. A typical week will be 3-4 field days and part of one day in the office.

In addition, we will pay airfare or mileage to and from the intern assignment and a $1,500 stipend to those that need to relocate. The internship will include an allowance for the purchase of boots and other required safety gear. The successful candidate will have paid corporate holidays and be enrolled in Weyerhaeuser’s 401(k) plan but will not be eligible for medical/dental or other benefits.
