Job Summary/Basic Function:
In the role of Research Equipment Technician, the candidate will focus on installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various types of research laboratory equipment and their associated infrastructure. The candidate will assist in the ongoing operation of the College of Engineering and College of Arts and Sciences research laboratories through campus recharge centers. The successful candidate should be a technical leader who is comfortable working in a research environment where priorities and projects can shift quickly. Flexibility and the ability to work with a wide variety of equipment and people (including faculty and students) is essential. Because many of the tools are not vendor-supported, the ability to diagnose problems at a fundamental level is required. The overall goal is to minimize down-time of critical equipment.
Level Scope:
Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self-development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.
Essential Functions:
90% of Time the Position must:
- Maintain, repair, and modify COEN & COAS laboratory equipment
- Perform basic equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation tasks on mechanical and electrical equipment used in laboratories used by faculty or students
- Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose, test, and repair equipment issues to include, but not limited to, replacing electrical components, AC and DC motors and controls, installing belts, tightening nuts and bolts, adjusting and aligning rolls and rollers, and replacing defective parts.
- Interface with equipment vendors for service, repairs, and upgrades as needed following vendor-suggested repair, including torque specifications
- Maintain and apply current knowledge in modern safety practices as applied to laboratory operations
- Assist facilities with assembly and operationally check new equipment to ensure it will perform as expected
- Flexibility with role and duty development
10% of Time the Position must:
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Experience installing, troubleshooting, testing, and repairing mechanical test and measurement equipment including small engines, hydraulic systems, and associated equipment, per manufacturers recommended specifications
- Test, maintain, and refurbish various types of support infrastructure such as vacuum pumps (rotary vane, roots, cryo, turbo, etc.)
- Use a variety of hand and power tools, electric meters, and equipment in performing duties
- Must be able to quickly learn the performance parameters of a wide variety of specialized pieces of equipment, including the assembly of test systems, and apply standardized test procedures
- Ability to read and interpret pneumatic and hydraulic schematics
- Must be self-directing, able to work with little or no supervision, and possess technical competence and confidence in wide range of areas
- Project management skills and excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Maintain conformance to project deliverables, timelines, and budgets
- Use of standard office productivity software required
- Complete, track, and perform preventative maintenance on equipment
Minimum Qualifications:
4-5 years of self-guided hands-on experience in repair of mechanical equipment, mechanical system troubleshooting and repair, and general system maintenance.
2-year associate’s degree or certification in a mechanics-related field, or equivalent military training and experience in mechanical repair. At least a basic understanding of electronics and mechanical, vacuum, and control systems is also required.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary Range $50,000 – $55,000.
