JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB SUMMARY:
Coordinates the City’s Public Art Program, including promoting the incorporation of art within the community, organizing special events related to the arts, coordinating and collaborating with City staff and community partners to implement the Public Art Master Plan, and assisting with community and Parks and Recreation Department programming.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
This classification is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the City-wide Public Art Program and implementing the Public Art Master Plan. Positions in this classification work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. This classification is distinguished from Recreation Coordinator in that the latter coordinates and oversees the daily operations of a Recreation program section. It is distinguished from Recreation Supervisor in that the latter is responsible for the overall supervision of a Recreation program.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a management classification within a framework of standard policies and procedures.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Develops strategic plans, timelines, and budget for new public art projects.
  • Liaises with local art groups on a regular and interval basis.
  • Coordinates activation of space through arts initiatives, installations, and programs.
  • Facilitates the artist and artwork selection and approval processes according to City’s Public Art Policy Manual; coordinates the design, fabrication, and installation of public artwork.
  • Oversees the documentation, care, and maintenance of the City’s public art collection.
  • Administers the donation of artwork gifts and memorials to the City from private individuals, collectors, artists, and other cities and countries.
  • Speaks publicly to community groups, classes, and other art-focused and interest groups regarding opportunities related to the City’s Public Art Program.
  • Monitors the Public Art Program budget and provides input to management during the budget preparation process.
  • Collaborates and communicates with a varied range of stakeholders, such as City leadership, City Council, community partners, and various panels, private developers, peer professionals, and community members.
  • Coordinates public information and community outreach for the Public Art Program, including the development of community programs, educational and promotional materials, and presentations; updates the Public Art Program website.
  • Provides input to management in the development of policies, procedures, and the budget for the Public Art Program.
  • Tracks and maintains public art project contracts and records.
  • Researches and compiles data, writes reports, and produces periodic newsletter articles.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and maintenance of City-wide goals and objectives.
  • Follows and uphold policies and philosophies of the City of San Luis Obispo and department or division to which assigned.
  • Interprets and implements relevant City, department, and division policies and procedures.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests for information.
  • Plans for maintenance and upkeep of past and future public art projects.
  • Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Techniques for effective communication, providing a high level of customer service, and effectively representing the City.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate degree in fine art, art history, business management, or a related field;
and
Two years of progressively responsible experience in art administration, art program coordination, municipal art program development, or a related field;
or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
POSSESSION AND MAINTENANCE OF:

  • A valid California class C driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifications completed within six months of employment.
  • Complete Child Abuse and Elder Abuse Mandated Reporter Training within one month of employment.

Retirement: California Public Employee’s Retirement System (PERS). The City participates only in the medicare portion of Social Security.
